Week - 3 Drop test Challenge
Aim: To perform Drop Test of a mobile phone.
Procedure:
Firstly we need to define materials to the components.
Materials:
-I have given mat001 (elastic) for the solid mobile phone and mat020 (Rigid) for the shell wall.
- I have choose elastic glass material for mobile phone and structural steel for rigid wall.
Parts:
-As we can see when we import the geometry to the software that there are 3 default parts available in our model. where there is one solid mobile phone and a 2D shell as well as 3D solid body for the rigid wall.
-Hence, we need to delete the 3D solid wall part.
-Also assign thickness to the 2D shell wall part.
Section:
-Well, in order to run the simulation we need to assign SECID to the parts. Hence, we need to create sections i.e one shell section and add 2d wall to it and create 1 solid section and add 3D solid mobile phone to it.
-And now, assigns these SECID to the parts.
Boundary Conditions:
-Now, we need to give boundary conditions to the geometry. As the wall is rigid we need to restrict the movement in all possible directions and for the mobile phone we need to restrict movements except the Z translation as we are running the analysis for drop test. In order to do the above mentioned we need to create a SPC_SET and assign the following.
Contacts:
-Here, in this model we are going to give an Automatic_surface to surface contact. As there will be a contact right when the mobile phone hits the wall.
Termination Time:
-This is the most important card that we have to assign for any simulation. As there will be a specific start time for any simulation and so does there will be an end time as well. In order the computer to recognize the simulation time we need to provide a certain time period for the simulation to run. That is the Termination time.
-Here in this simulation I have given the simulation time of 5s.
Intitial:
-In order the mobile phone to move in the respective direction i.e negative Z we need to provide the initial velocity to the geometry.
-In this simulation I have given the initial velocity to the mobile phone as -20m/s.
DataBase:
-Now, That we have provided all the input parameters for the simulation to run. We need to request the output parameters for which we are goind to run the analysis.
-I have requested for the Binary D3 plots.
Result:

-As you can see from the above image we can say that the blue color region shows the less effective region and the red color region shows the higher effective region.
The maximum von-mises stress is 7.7MPA in Z direction.
Conclusion:
The drop test simulation has been performed as per the required criteria.
