Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Aim:
1.To find the EV_defaults_in_file with cargo mass of 500 kg with default conditions can travel 45 kms with FTP drive cycle.
2.To repeat the simulation by changing the battery capacity in the above cases.
3.To perform the gradability test with PRIUS_jpn_defaults_in file and to compare the result.
Explanations:
ADVISOR tool is been developed in November 1994 by the national renewable energy laboratory(NREL) which allows users to simulate and analyze conventional, advance, light and heavy vehicles, including hybrid electric and fuel cell vehicles.
1.
- Launch the MATLAB and first set default location folder to the advisor
- Type ‘advisor’ in command window and press enter, by this the advisor window will be opened.
- In that open the EV_defaults_in file and change the cargo mass to 500
- Then press continue and in the next window press RUN.

- After the simulation the distance covered by the vehicle is 11 ,22 & 25.7 miles/hr ie 17.7, 35.4 and 41.1kmph.
- Thus the vehicle cant travel 45kmph.
2.
- Increase the battery capacity(#of mod) and find the distance covered.
- For each and evey battery change find the distance covered in miles and kms with the number of cycles.

#of mod #of cycle miles kms
26 1 11 17.7
26 2 22.1 35.56
26 3 26.5 42.64

#of mod #of cycle miles kms
27 1 11 17.7
27 2 22.1 35.56
27 3 27.8 44.7

#of mod #of cycle miles kms
28 1 11 17.7
28 2 22.1 35.56
28 3 28.8 46.3
- After the battery capacity of 28 with the three drive cycles the vehicle can be able to travel above 45 kms.
3.To perform the gradability test for PRIUS_Jpn_default model.
- Change the vehicle model ti PRIUS_Jpn_default and continue to the next window.
- Click on the gradability test and click grade options, a new window will be opened.
- Change the speed, click on the all system enabled, press OK and RUN the simulation.
- By changing the speed and the duration we can find the gradability of the vehicle.

Duration-10 seconds
Speed(miles) kms Gradability(%)
20 32.18 19.8
25 40.23 16.5
30 48.28 14.7
35 56.32 13
40 64.37 11.7

Duration-20 seconds
Speed(miles) kms Gradability(%)
20 32.18 22.9
25 40.23 19.7
30 48.28 17.7
35 56.32 16
40 64.37 14.6
As the speed with constant time increases the gradability decreases & for the same speed but longer the time the gradability increases.
Result:
1.The vehicle cant run for about 45kmph.
2.By changing the vehicle's battery capacity and drive cycle we can run the vehicle for 45kmph.
3.The gradability is been checked with respect to time and speed.
