Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

Q1). For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Theory:

Advisor tool is Advanced vehicle simulator developed by renewable energy laboratory form USA. It is Based on scripts or .m files rather than model files for use Matlab and Simulink. This tool will help us to understand about vehicle performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB easily.

Download the advisor tool simulator from sourceforge.net

Extract the zip. file after that open Matlab add the directory path, Right click on the advisor.m file select the path and the folders. now type "advisor" in the command window line. This tool is based on Advanced GUI.

select metric unit where the distance is in kilometer in case of US the distance is in miles. click on start another GUI is appear is called by the advisor Programme.

For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions,

The Defaults Electric Vehicle is a pure EV where it is completely driven by electric source

The default cargo mass value is 136 kg that we are changing to 500 kg.

So, our Aim the vehicle can travel to 45 km with FTP drive cycle to be repeated by 2.55 times where Vehicle can cover the Distance of 45 km but there is a warning appear.

Warning Message

Conlucion:

Here we can understand from the simulation, the Vehicle can't can run for the Distance of 45 km and there is a message appearing and the required Distance excceded given EV range. So if to achive the given Distance that we need to increase the Battery Capacity.

Q2). In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Here we increase the Battery modules of the Vehicle from 25 to 30 modules to give more power for further Distance has to cover.

after changing increase the Battery capacity modules now the vehicle is able to run the required Distance.

Conclusion:

we have conclude that from the simulation that the required Distance (45km) can be achived by changing the increase in the Battery modules that to boost the Vehicle to Run above 41.7 km

Q3). Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Compare your results in table and conclude.

Pioneered by Toyota Prius, most full hybrid cars (including Honda, Ford and GM's) use planetary CVT gearboxes to combine both power sources and vary transmission ratio. It is a complicated but clever idea. The picture below illustrates the system architecture of Toyota Prius. The powertrain consists of engine, electric motor MG1 (which normally acts as generator), electric motor MG2 (works mainly as propulsion motor), a planetary gearset called "Power Split Device", inverters and battery.

The Gradeability test is performed by the Vehicle by the increaseing the speed (5,10,15,20,25,30,35,40,45,50) keeping the constant duration of time (40s).

1) 5mph-----36% gradeability.

2) 10mph-----34.3% Gradeability

3) 15mph-----28% gradeability

4) 20mph-----23.5% gradeability

5) 25mph-----20.7% gradeability

6)30mph-------18.7% gradeability

7)35mph-----17% gradeability

8)40mph-----15.6% gradeability

9)45mph-------14.4% gradeablity

10)50mph--------13.4% gradeablity

SR.No speed (mph) Speed (kmph) Gradeability (%) Duration (sec)
1 5 8 36 40
2 10 16.1 34.3 40
3 15 24.1 28 40
4 20 32.2 23.5 40
5 25 40.2 20.7 40
6 30 48.3 18.7 40
7 35 56.3 17 40
8 40 64.4 15.6 40
9 45 72.4 14.4 40

10 50 80.5 13.4 40

Conlculsion:

From the above simulation we can conclude that when speed increases then gradeability of the vehicle decreases respectively.
