Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

INTRODUCTION:- ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.

Conclusion:- From tha above case we conclude that after changing the 'Cargo value' to 500 and 'Drive cycle' to 'FTP' the vehicle runs only 25.7 miles i.e almost around 41.36 km. The State of Charge (SOC) of the vehicle also decreases from 100% to 0% in only 3 number of drive cycles. The 4th number of drive cycle didn't come into play.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

Changing the number of module to 30

Conclusion:- Here we have changed the battery capacity from 25 to 30 and have exceuted 4 number of cycles. We can observe that the vehicle covers a distance of 30.5 miles i.e around 49 km. Hence by incresing the battery capacity we can travel a distance above 45 km.

Changing the number of module to 40

Conclusion:- Here we have changed the battery capacity to 40 and have exceuted 4 number of cycles. We can observe that the vehicle covers a distance of 44.2 miles i.e around 71.13 km. Hence by incresing the battery capacity we can travel a distance above 45 km.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file

Gradeability test:- The purpose of this test is to determine the maximum grade on which the vehicles can move forward at constant speed

Gradeability test at different speed

At speed 20 mph

At speed 25 mph

At speed 30 mph

At speed 35 mph

At speed 40 mph

At speed 45 mph

At speed 50 mph

Conclusion:- Here we can conclude that as we increase the speed of the vehicle its Gradeability decreses.

Below is the table relating speed and gradeability of a given vehicle.
