Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
Use ADVISOR tool and simulate the following
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file
Compare your results in table and conclude.
Answers:
1.
Advisor tool:
Advisor is Advanced Vehicle Simulator.ADVISOR is a MATLAB/Simulink based simulation program for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of light and heavy-duty vehicles with conventional (gasoline/diesel), hybrid-electric, full-electric, and fuel cell powertrains. New features are developed under the title "Advanced Vehicle Simulator". Periodically, stable versions of Advanced Vehicle Simulator will be submitted for consideration as the next canonical version of the ADVISOR software.
Start Advisor tool:
- Download the advisor tool and unzip the files
- Place the path of advisor in matlab
- Type "advisor" in command window
- Advisor will launch
It has three main windows:
- Vehicle input window
- Simulation parameter window
- Results window

Change to metric units and hit start button and goto vehicle input window

Change drive train configuration to ev
Change cargo mass to 500kg and hit continue and go to simulation parameters window

Change drive cycle type to CYC_FTP
Here we can also change no. of drive cycles
Enter RUN button and results window will open

Here we can see that distance travelled in 1 drive cycle is 17.8km and it used almost 40% of soc
Now change the no. of drive cycles to 2 and run

Here the distance travelled is 35.5kms and it used 82% of soc
Now change the no. of drive cycles to 3 and run

Here we can see the distance travelled is 41.4kms and it used 100% of soc
| No. of drive cycles |
Distance travelled (kms) |
% SOC used (%) |
| 1 | 17.8 | 40 |
| 2 | 35.5 | 82 |
| 3 | 41.4 | 100 |
Therefore we conclude that ev_defaults in CYC_ftp drive cycle with 500kg cargo mass cannot travel 45kms as the soc is fully utilized when the range is 41.4kms.
2.
Changing the battery capacity and simulating again
By changing the energy storage systems with 27modules from 25 modules and simulating:

The nominal voltage of battery changed to 333V

The distance travelled for 3 drive cycles changed to 44.8kms
Now changing the battery modules to 28 no.s

Now the nominal voltage changed to 345V

Now with 28 modules with 3 drive cycles th distance travelled is 46.3kms.So by increasing the battery modules by 28 we can cover 45kms.
3.
Performing gradeability test with Toyota PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file and compare results in table and conclude.

Change drive cycle configuration to prius and hit continue

Select gradeability test and click grade option:

We can select the desired speed and duration and change the systems settings to All systems enabled and hit run

We can see that at 88.5kmph for 10sec the gradeability is 8.9%

Now for 45mph ,the gradeability is 10.7%

Now for 30mph the gradeability is 14.7%

For 60mph the gradeability is 8.1%

Comparing with the table: for 10sec duration
| Vehicle speed (mph) | Vehicle speed (kmph) | Gradeability(%) |
| 30 | 48.3 | 14.7 |
| 45 | 72.4 | 10.7 |
| 55 | 88.5 | 8.9 |
| 60 | 96.6 | 8.1 |
From the table it is clear that when vehicle speed increases the gradeability decreases.
