Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool

AIM:

To simulate the following using ADVISOR tool:

1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, find if the vehicle can the travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle.

2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.

3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file. Compare your results in table and conclude.

PROCEDURE:

1. Load ADVISOR Tool in Matlab.

2.Select the EV_defaults_in file, and assign cargo mass as 500 kg with all other default conditions.

3. Run the file and observe the results(distance travelled and soc of battery)

In the fig. below, EV-defaults_in is loaded and cargo mass is set to 500kg.

CYC_FTP is the drive cycle and no. of cycles is taken as "1".

From results, it can be seen that 17.767km is covered in one drive cycle.

Considering no. of drive cycles as 5, battery soc reaches to zero percentage when the car travels for 41.4kms. Hence it is not possible to cover 45kms with the given conditions as per the question.

Hence, we can conclude that the vehicle cannot cover a distance of 45kms using FTP drive cycle and the maximum distance covered is 41.4kms.

2. AIM:

Changing the battery capacity and repeating the simulation.

PROCEDURE:

Here, the battery capacity is increased to 45 no. of modules and Vnom becomes 555v.

For no. of cycles =2, vehicle covers 35.5kms with soc at 50%.

For no. of cycles=3, 53.3kms is covered and soc is 30% by the end.

Hence by 3 drive cycles, the vehicle is able to cover a distance more than 45kms (ie, 53.3kms) after changing the battery capacity.

3. AIM

To perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file and compare the results in table and conclude.

PROCEDURE:

1. Load ADVISOR Tool in Matlab.

2.Select the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file.

3. Choose the drive cycle CYC_UDDS.

4. The gradeability test is selected and by selecting the "grade options" set the required speed and duration.

5.Run the file keeping all other parameters as default values and observe the results for different values of speeds.

PRIUS_jpn_defaults_in file is loaded:

Gradeability test is done for a speed of 45mph and duration =10s

Gradeability =2.2%

Gradeability test is done for a speed of 55mph and duration =10s

Gradeability=1.7%

Gradeability test is done for a speed of 65mph and duration =10s

Gradeability=1.2%

Gradeability test is done for a speed of 75mph and duration =10s

Gradeability=0.7%

Gradeability test is done for a speed of 80mph and duration =10s and gradeability=0.3%

Tabulating all the values, we have:

Hence it can be concluded that as the vehicle speed increases, gradeability decreases.
