Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool
''Week-3 Challenge: ADVISOR Tool''
Aim: By using Advisor Tool we have to use simulate the following conditions.
Objective:
1. For EV_defaults_in file, if cargo mass is 500 kg with all other default conditions, can the vehicle travel for 45 km with FTP drive cycle? Conclude your observations.
2. In the above case, try changing the battery capacity and repeat the simulation.
3. Perform gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file Compare your results in table and conclude.
ADVISOR TOOL:
ADVISOR, NREL’s ADvanced VehIcle SimulatOR, is a set of model, data, and script text files for use with Matlab and Simulink. It is designed for rapid analysis of the performance and fuel economy of conventional, electric, and hybrid vehicles. ADVISOR also provides a backbone for the detailed simulation and analysis of user defined drivetrain components, a starting point of verified vehicle data and algorithms from which to take full advantage of the modeling flexibility of Simulink and analytic power of MATLAB.
Benefit of ADVISOR Tool:
- estimate the fuel economy of vehicles that have not yet been built
- learn about how conventional, hybrid or electric vehicles use (and lose) energy throughout their drivetrains
- compare relative tailpipe emissions produced on a number of cycles
- evaluate an energy management strategy for your hybrid vehicle’s fuel converter
- optimize the gear ratios in your transmission to minimize fuel use or maximize performance, etc.
Study 1:
Procedure:
- At first, we have to open the Matlab Software and change the current (active) directory to be the top-level ADVISOR directory and to run the Advisor Tool we have type Advisor at the MATLAB command prompt.

- After that a new window will open and have to select unit AS Metric in that window and press the start. The following window is shown below,

- Then we have to go the load file and have to select EV_defaults_in.
- After that we have to change the cargo mass to 500 and click on continue.
The following window is shown below,

- In the next window we have to change the drive cycle to CYC_FTP. The following window is shown below,

- Now run the program and see the result.

- From the above window we can clearly see that the distance covered is 17.8 km. However, our aim is to run up to 45 km and for that we have click the back and go to the previous window and change the drive cycle to 3. The following window is shown below,

- Now again we have to run the program and see the result.

Result:
- From the above simulation, we came to know that after changing no. of drive cycle to 3 the vehicle can go up to 41.4 km. And also we can see Warning messages as battery is got completely discharged.
- So, we can conclude that the vehicle can not go 45 km with 500 kg Cargo Mass with the FTP Drive Cycle.
Study 2:
In this study, we have to do the above simulation by changing the battery capacity.
Procedure:
- At first, we have to change the battery capacity to 30 and press the continue. The following window is shown below,

- Now we have to again run the program and see the result.

Result:
- From the above simulation we came to know that if we increase the battery capacity to 30 then the vehicle can go 49.1 km.
Study 3:
In this study we have to perform the gradeability test with PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in file and also have to compare the result.
Toyota Prius:
The Toyota Prius is a full hybrid electric automobile developed and manufactured by Toyota since 1997. Initially offered as a 4-door sedan, it has been produced only as a 5-door fastback hatchback since 2003.
The Prius is a power-split or series-parallel (full) hybrid, sometimes referred to as a combined hybrid, a vehicle that can be propelled by gasoline or electric power or both. Wind resistance is reduced by a drag coefficient of Cd=0.25 (0.29 for 2000 model) with a Kammback design to reduce air resistance. Lower rolling-resistance tires are used to reduce road friction. An electric water pump eliminates serpentine belts. In the US and Canada, a vacuum flask is used to store hot coolant when the vehicle is powered off for reuse so as to reduce warm-up time. The Prius engine makes use of the Atkinson Cycle.

Procedure:
- At first, we have to select the PRIUS_Jpn_defaults_in Load file and click on continue. The following window is shown below,

- Then in the next window, we have to select the gradeability Test and have to go grade options and enable all systems.
- Next, we have to give the required input as in speed (mph) without changing the other segments and click on the run option.
The following window is shown below,

Now we have to test the gradeability test for different speed
- Test for 10 mph results in 30.3% gradeability.

- Test for 20 mph results in 19.8% gradeability.

- Test for 30 mph results in 14.7% gradeability.

- Test for 40 mph results in 11.7% gradeability.

- Test for 50 mph results in 9.7% gradeability.

Results:
| SPEED(MPH) | SPEED(KMPH) | GRADEABILITY |
| 10 | 16.1 | 30.3 |
| 20 | 32.2 | 19.8% |
| 30 | 48.3 | 14.7% |
| 40 | 64.4 | 11.7% |
| 50 | 80.5 | 9.7% |
Conclusion:
- From the above table we can clearly see that the gradeability increases when the speed of the vehicle decreases.
- The highest gradeability for TOYOTA PRIUS is at 10 mph i.e. 30.3%.
