Week 3 - 2D meshing for sheet metal

OBJECTIVE: To extract the mid surface for all the components after checking the geometrical errors and mesh the mid surface with the given element Quality criteria.

CAD MODEL IMAGE:

PROCEDURE:

  • The given model of the hood is imported by the open model command.

  • First, we will be performing mid-surfacing and meshing of the outer extract reinforcement.

  • The outer extract model is checked for geometrical errors first.
  • Then mid-surfacing of the outer extract is done.

  • The mid-surface is again checked for any geometrical errors.

  • Now that the component is ready for meshing, meshing is done by best mesh command. As the outer extract component is symmetrical, meshing is done for one half of the component.

  • For ensuring proper mesh flow, the elements are selected and remeshed using reconstruct command..
  • Then the tria elements are taken care of by split command.
  • Next, the quality criteria are given as input and checked.

  • once all the quality criteria are fulfilled, the elements are released from the geometry and then the mesh is transformed to the symmetric side using the transform command.

  • Thus the meshing of the first component is successfully completed and checked.
  • The mid-surface generation and meshing of hinge and latch reinforcement components are done in the similar method as mentioned above.

  • For ensuring proper mesh flow, the elements are selected and remeshed.
  • Then the tria elements are taken care of by split command.
  • The elements are again remeshed using reconstruct command to ensure proper mesh flow.
  • Now the quality of the mesh is checked by the quality index command. The given quality threshold values are given and the quality of the mesh is evaluated.
  • The elements which are failing the given criteria are then corrected by cleanup tools.

  • Now the inner surface of the hood is selected for meshing.

  • A geometry check of the component is done at first to identify and correct geometrical errors.
  • Now mid surface is extracted.
  • The geometrical errors are checked again and corrected.

  • The geometrical errors are then selected and corrected separately.

  • Now meshing of the component is done.

  • After meshing of half the part, quality criterias are checked.

  • Once all the quality criterias are corrected, the elements are released from the geometry and the mesh is transformed to the symmetric side.

  • Thus the meshing of the inner extract is also completed.
  • Now properties are checked and applied to the corresponding components.

RESULTS: Mid-surface generation for all the components after checking the geometrical errors and meshing of the components with the given element Quality criteria is successfully completed
