Week 2 Session 7
Series Architecture
- Here motor is only element that is directly connected to the transmission system
- There is no direct connection of ICE engine with transmission system
- Here there is generator along with the ICE engine for producing electric energy from ICE engine.
- Motor get electrical energy either from battery or ICE engine
- Less travel range
- Engine smaller
Advantages-
- Only motor is connected to transmission system so no need of multi ratio gear box.
- Here engine operates at its maximum efficiency points.
disadvantages-
- Energy efficiency is less
- Extra generator is required so more space is accomodated
- more costlier
Parallel Architecture
- Here motor and ICE engine is directly connected to the transmission system
- No generator along with ICE engine
- Motor get electrical energy from battery only
- More travel range
- Engine is not smaller
Advantages-
- Less costlier as compared to series and series-parallel
- Energy efficiency is high as compared to series
- less space is accomodated
disadvantages-
- Multi ratio gear box may require
- efficiency is low at low rotation speed
- ICE engine cannot be used to charge the battery
Series-Parallel Architecture
- Here there is power split module
- Series path from engine to wheel
- parallel path from battery to wheel through power split
- Generator is present along with engine
Advantages-
- more efficient
disadvantages-
- it is complex
- more space is accomodated
- costlier
