Challenge

Week 2 Railwheel and Track

1. Objective

In this challenge we have to compare Total Deformation, Equivalent stress and the life under both cases of loads where the new load is 5 times the original one. Next we have to implement a user defined result and calculate the total deformation and check if it is same as that obtained by the inbuilt result by ANSYS for a load of 100000N

2. Case setup and Execution

When bearing load is increase by a factor of 5, maximum value of deformation is 1001.6mm, that of Equivalent stress is 408.42 MPa and this case will cause more damage to the rail wheel track as compared to previous one
However during original bearing load, maximum value of Total deformation is, that of Equivalent stress is and the rail wheel track will be in good condition.

5. Result, Conclusion and Report

Fig 1 Total Deformation for Case 1 when bearing load is multiplied by 5

Fig 2 Equivalent stress for case 1 when bearing load is multiplied by 5

Fig 3 Life when bearing load is 500KN

Fig 4 Total deformation for case 1 when bearing load is 100KN

Fig 5 Equivalent stress for case 1 when bearing load is 100KN

Fig 6 Life when bearing load is 100KN

Case 1 Bearing load is 100KN Case 1 Bearing load multiplied by 5
Total deformation - 1001.4mm Total deformation - 1001.6 mm
Equivalent stress - 98.565 MPa Equivalent stress - 408.42 MPa

As seen from the above table, total deformation is almost the same but the equivalent stress in case 1 with bearing load of 5 times the original load is higher

Case 2 User defined result

Fig 5 Life of rail wheel track

Maximum value of life is 1e6

Fig 6 Total deformation

Maximum value of total deformation is 971.33mm

As compared to the total deformation when the bearing load was 100KN, the value obtained by user defined result is less.
