Week 2 Bevel Gear Challenge
Objective:-
To find what is grid dependency test and solve for Von-mises stress, Equivalent elastic strain and total deformation for 3 different mesh sizes of 6mm,5mm and 4mm
Grid dependency test and its use
- We use grid dependency test to identify quality of mesh until a critical result such as equivalent stress does not alter but rather it converges
- We begin analysis using a coarser mesh size and then gradually decreasing the size of mesh to finer in order to obtain optimal results
- As the mesh size approaches zero, the approximate solution approaches the actual solution
- Mesh size 6mm
The maximum value of equivalent elastic strain is 0.0035098, Von-mises stress is 621.64 MPa and total deformation is 69.247 mm whereas the minimum value of equivalent elastic strain is 3.5143e-10, that of Von-mises stress is 2.2234e-5 MPa and total deformation is 19.151 mm

2. Mesh size 5mm
The maximum value of equivalent elastic strain is 0.0038194, Von-mises stress is 666.72 MPa and total deformation is 69.235 mm whereas the minimum value of equivalent elastic strain is 2.9398e-10, that of Von-mises stress is 2.9788e-5 MPa and total deformation is 19.151 mm.

3. Mesh size 4mm
The maximum value of equivalent elastic strain is 0.0029779, Von-mises stress is 499.86 MPa and total deformation is 69.247 mm whereas the minimum value of equivalent elastic strain is 3.4459e-10, that of Von-mises stress is 3.2195e-5 MPa and total deformation is 19.151 mm.

After looking at the results for all 3 cases, total deformation remains constant at 19.151 mm. Maximum value of Elastic strain is maximum in case 1 and minimum in case 3. Maximum value of von mises stress is higher in case 2 compared to other cases and lower in case 1. Whereas deformation in all the 3 cases is almost same.
