Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
Case 1
- Force of 500N (tensile) is applied to the right face
- There is a total deformation of 0.00026551mm (maximum) to the right face with minimum deformation at the fixed end (left face)
- Maximum equivalent stress of 0.5852MPa occurs at the center of circular region with minimum stress scattered over the circular region has a value of 0.008048MPa
- Maximum principal stress of 0.60246MPa occurs at the center of circular region with minimum principal stress of -0.011425MPa
- Maximum shear stress of 0.30099MPa occurs at the center of circular region with minimum shear stress of 0.0045721MPa
Case 2
- There is a total deformation of 0.00028711mm (maximum) occurs to the right face with minimum value of 0mm
- Equivalent Von-Mises stress of 0.56105 MPa (maximum) occurs at the center of hole with diameter of 60mm and has a minimum value of 0.0013139MPa
- Maximum principal stress of 0.63175MPa occurs at the center of hole with a diameter of 60mm and has a minimum value of -0.0093117MPa
- Maximum shear stress of 0.28883MPa occurs at the center of hole with a diameter of 60mm with a minimum value of 0.00075618MPa
In case 2, total deformation, maximum equivalent stress is higher compared to case 1. Moreover, maximum principal stress is higher in case 1 than in case 2. Maximum shear stress in case 1 is comparatively higher than in case 2.
From an analysis standpoint, as total deformation, equivalent stress is higher in case 2, there is high chances for the plate to shear from the middle circular region with a diameter of 60mm.
From a manufacturing stand point, case 1 would be easier to manufacture as it has only 1 hole with a diameter of 60mm as compared to case 2 where 2 seperate hole needs to be drilled in with a diameter of 30mm.
