Week 2 Railwheel and Track

Aim: Perform a static structural analysis on the Railwheel and Track setup according to the given conditions.

Procedure:

  • Open Ansys Workbench and select static structural. Assign the material in engineering data and import the model in spaceclaim.
  • Update the model and click on edit and rename as per convenience.
  • Under connections, create contacts between faces of railwheel and track as frictional with coefficient value of 0.3.

  • Similarly, create contact between railwheel and shaft but this time, frictionless.

  • Now we need to assign different types of joints between different components
  • Translational joint is created for shaft of the wheel as it translates in a specified direction.

  • Planar joint is created for wheel as it move in straight line over the track.

  • Track is assigned to be a fixed joint over which wheel, along with the shaft moves.

  • Assign elemnt size of 50mm for mesh to be created for whole setup and 35mm element sized mesh for the contact faces between railwheel and track.

  • Apply the following analysis setting under static analysis.

  • Create Joint for the shaft for specifying its transition distance of 500mm along the track under static structural section.

  • Create a bearing load as well acting downwardsover the inner circumference of wheel.

  • Finally, insert equivalent stress, equivalent ealstic strain total deformation, etc and hit solve to obtain the following results.

Results:

Parameter Bearing load of 100000 N Bearing load of 500000 N
Total Deformation
Stress 1
Stress 2
Strain 1
Strain 2
Life
User defined

Conclusion:

  • Significant changes in stress and strain can be observed.
  • Life span decreases drastically when a higher load is applied.
  • Total deformation calculated by software default equation and user defined match perfectly.
