Week 2 Railwheel and Track

Objective of Simulation:

Perform a static Structural Analysis on the Railwheek & Track setup under the following scenarios / cases.

Case 1:

Check & compare the Total deformation, equivalent stress and life under a load of 100 KN & 500 KN.

Case 2:

Calculate the total deformation using the User Defined result and compare them against inbuilt result by Ansys

Material Properties:

Structual steel assigned for all three components used in the simulation - Shaft, Wheel & Track.

Yield Strength - 250 Mpa

CAD Model Details:

All load cases uses the same CAD model.

Meshing Quality:

Mesh Type: Tetrahedran

Mesh Size: 50 mm general. 35 mm Face meshing for surfaces that are in contact.

Mech Quality: Medium

Boundary Constraints / Connections:

Same for All Cases.

Fixed Joints:

Base / Bottom Surface of rail track is fixed.

Planar Constraint:

Wheel surface that is vertical to the track / ground is constraind by plane to allow ratational movement.

Translational movement:

Shaft is free to move in X direction / the direction of track.

Frictionless contact considered between shaft to wheel.

Friction contact considered between wheel & track with coefficient of friction 0.3

Analysis & Conclusion:

Load 100 KN Load 500 KN Comments
Von Mises Stress 161.47 Mpa 383.16 Mpa For 500 KN load, stress on the wheel exceed the yield strength of 250 Mpa.
Von Mises Strain 0.056% 0.024%
Total Deformation 1001.3 mm 1001.2 Includes wheel movement
Life 9.43e5 cycles 3088.5 cycles For 500 KN load, Stress on the wheel exceed the yield strength of 250 Mpa but it is below the ultimate strength of 460 Mpa. Hence the wheel can only last for 3089 cycles.

Load Condition of 100 KN

Load Condition of 500 KN

Case 2:

Ansys in built total deformation includes the wheel movement. Hence it cannot be referenced.

For the user defined result of Displacement, further understanding is needed as wheel displacement is 1.08 mm for both loading conditions.
