Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Aim: To mesh the given geometry by using the given properties a by following the standard Meshing procedure.

Objective:

  1. Import the geometry.
  2. Check for any anamolies in the geometry.
  3. Fix the error or missing elements.
  4. Create a regional PID for each individual component of the valve.
  5. Do a Geometry check up.
  6. If there are any errors fix it (Intersect, Surface corrections etc.).
  7. Mesh the individual components of the valve.
  8. Create the three different cases as given in requirements.(Target length = 1mm, 3 mm and 5 mm)

Content of the body:

  1. Importing the geometry:
    1. Increase the performance of the ANSA:
    2. Open the geometry by using the File > Open command > select the geometry:
  2. Now using not and PID region select the outer body of the wall and hide it.
    1. Now as the outer body is selected using middle mouse button hide it using the not command.
    2. Only spring, head and column are visible:
    3. Now hide the head of the plunger using not command with element selection:
  3. Fill the base of the column using the new command from face, use the loop here as it will encircle the perimeter beyond the hotpoints:
    1. The above step is deleted in the further steps to be followed.
  4. Create the PID region for spring and column:
    1. The spring is named as spring and applied to the respective part.
    2. The column is named in the shell property and applied.(by selecting the PID region option from the tool bar)
  5. Use the intersect(Face) option to intersect the geometriess viisble to create cons at the intersection and seperate the surfaces:
    1. First part is selected as the spring and second part as column. (left click + middle mouse)
    2. Select keep option or close the popup as we will be deleting the faces manually.
  6. Now stsrt by deleting the intersecting faces using the delete option from the tool bar:
    1. Before deletion:
    2. After deleting triple cons:
    3. Deleting the extra cons:
    4. Now deleting the inward pushed faces and replacing the surface with new face:
      1. Add new curve using cons2curve:
      2. Increase the resolution of the curve using fine command;
      3. New surface:
        1. Delete the curve.
      4. Removing the double cons:
        1. Create extra cut and delete the curve and new surface using fill hole:
    5. Now delete the remaning spring parts intersecting:
  7. Run the geometry check:
    1. Since it is a collapsed cons (starting and ending point are same) use autofix to fix it and again running the check:
    2. The warnings are of the convex cons so for now it does not concern us.
    3. And the colapse coons are fixed by using the autofix.
    4. As all the issues are solved we can proceed to the next step.
  8. Now after deleting the intersected part of the spring and column:
  9. Now fixing the outer casing surface errors:
    1. Inserting the hot point:
    2. Running the geometry check:
      1. All the triple cons are justified by the base of the column.
  10. The PID's are defined and the compression io done to delete unused/repeating PID's.
    • The PID's are defined and the compression io done to delete unused/repeating PID's.
  11. Now uncut the geometry to eleminate any sharp edges while meshing:
  12. Meshing (1mm):
    1. Create a spot mesh of perimeters and macros of 1mm.
  13. Meshin (3mm):
  14. Meshing (5mm):
  15. By selecting the single PID each time spot mesh the entire geometry.
  16. Freeze(blue colored) the PID after it has meshed to avoid any interference causing the errors.
  17. Measure the nodal distance to verify the mesh obtained.

Results:

  1. Meshing (1mm):
  2. Meshing (3mm):
  3. Meshing (5mm):

Learning outcomes:

  1. Cleaning the geometry.
  2. Fixing the surface errors.
  3. Meshing.
  4. Effect of Resolution/Target length variation.
  5. Creating and selecting the optimum mesh paramters for the analysis.

Conclusions:

  1. The geometry cleanup and topology cleanup are performed on the geometry successfully.
  2. The geometry is meshed for three different element size i.e. Target length = 1mm, 3 mm and 5 mm.
  3. Less the Target length high is the surface mesh resolution (and nodes) and vice versa.
  4. For more accurate results use very low target length(high resolution) but this must not invertly interfere in the design of the geometry.
  5. The procedure and the results are explained in detail with the corresponding figures.
