Week 2 Challenge : Surface meshing on a Pressure valve

Objective: To generate the surface meshing of a given model and compare it with different target lengths after removing errors in its geometry and clean the geometry without any voids, learn knowledge about the ansa tools and their physical significance.

Procedure:

  • First, we need to check the errors in the geometry in the geometry checks section.
  • If errors are there like single cons then we need to remove them by converting them into double cons by patching proper surfaces with the help of a new option in the faces section.

  • For surface meshing, double cons are desirable other than that remaining are undesirable.
  • After converting single cons into double cons then again check the geometry and if any triple cons are present try to remove them if it does not create any impact on the geometry.

  • Create the new PIDs as per our geometry model.

  • After creating PIDs then we need to add the length of the target mesh size as 1mm, 3mm, and 5mm.

5mm Target mesh length:-

The inside parts spring, pressure head, column, and base surface mesh are very poor if we apply a 5mm target length for that meshing is done by 1mm size.

3mm Target length:

1mm Target length:

Learning Outcomes:

  • Clean the geometry properly.
  • Proper usage of tools in ansa.

Improving the quality of mesh at different regions as per the minimum size present at the location.

Results:

  • Finally, mesh generation was completed with 3 different target lengths.
  • The target length decreases with an increase in the number of elements.
  • The target length decides the quality of the mesh.

Conclusions:

  • The minimum target length increases the number of elements and gives the minutiae details of the geometry and improves the quality of the mesh.
  • The quality of the mesh is one of the parameters the how close our problem is to practical ones.
  • The minimum target length leads to a finer mesh which increases the computational time and effort but the results are good.
  • To get optimum conditions we need to perform GIT (Grid independence test) where the solution is independent of mesh size and the number of elements.
