Week 2 : Basic Calibration of Single cylinder SI-Engine

1.Run the case at 1800 rpm and list down important parameters (20 Marks)

  • air flow rate
  • BMEP
  • BSFC
  • In-cylinder pressure

The case set up has been changed to 1800 RPM and the results are obtained as shown below. Snap shots of 2 different ways ( from RLT and table ), to view the results, are shown below.

  • air flow rate = 24.646053 kg/h
  • BMEP = 9.476768 bar
  • BSFC = 239.17131 g/kW-h
  • In-cylinder pressure = 48.89 bar

2. Increase the power output at 3600 rpm by 10% (30 Marks)

The case set up has been changed multiple times with various variables to check the increase of power. In order to increase power, the combustion needs to be rich or more air intake. Initially, change in A/F ratio has been made for rich combustion. But despite of changing more, there was no significant increase in the power output. Later, change in Piston/Bore ratio was made, and it was seen that there is a limitaion to the minimum value of 0.9 and hence the power could not be increased further. Changing Combustion duration and anchor angle gave very slow change in power as well. Finally, change in the diameter of bore and stroke was made to increase the swept volume, which accomodates more air and hence 10% increase in power i.e., from 16.7 kW to 18.3 kW was achieved.
