Week 14 challenge
OBJECTIVE:
- The main objective of this project is assemble the butterfly and apply GD&T.
- To understand the concept of geometric tolerance and dimensioning.
Introduction
GEOMETRIC DIMENSIONING & TOLERANCE
- Geometrical dimension is a geometric characteristic, the size of which is specified as length angle location or centre of distance etc.
- Tolerance on a dimension is the total permissible variation in its size, which is equal to difference between the maximum and minimum size.
- GD&T is a symbolic language used in engineering drawing. It is a symbolic language used to specify size shape orientation and location on a part.
- It is used to control dimension variation in part.So less variation means less waste
- It is used for ensuring the proper assembly of mating parts.
Butterfly Valve- A butterfly valve is a valve that is used to regulate or isolate the flow of a fluid.
COMPONENTS OF BUTTERFLY VALVE
- Body
- Shaft/Stem
- Disc Plate
- Retainer
- Lever
- Nut
- Screw
Common Commands Used
- Line
- Circle
- Hole
- Extrude
- Trim
- Unite
- Move Object
- Circular Pattern
- Revolve
DESIGNING OF COMPONENTS:
1.Butterfly valve body
The body of butterfly valve is housing for internal component. It is the main part of butterfly valve. The valve body fits between the pipe flanges
Procedure
- I have drawn a sketch in XZ plane as shown below image.
- Now extruded in 112.5mm symmetrical.
- Again we have drawn a sketch as soon below image for its 3 arms,
- Next i have extruded it 16mm symmetrical.
- Now using move object command I have made arms both side as soon in below figure.
- Now I have made a new plane and created a sketch as shown below image and excluded it.
- Using whole command to make counter bore on that above surface.
- And I have created three holes on the above surface.
- Make a cylinder opposite side as shown in image.
- Use unit to convert into single body.

2. DESIGNING OF SHAFT/STEM
- Shaft is inserted into the body of the valve and sits perpendicular to the direction of flow. It holds the disc inside the body and is clamped with the lever outside the body.
Procedure
- Draw a sketch as shown below image
- Revolve it 360 degree.
- Draw a another sketch as shown below image.
- Extrude it and use subract.
- Draw another sketch as shown below
- Now extrude it 9.25 mm
- Make a 2 circles as shown below.
- Extrude it and provide the chamfer at corner and our shaft is made.
- Provide the GD&t in drafting.

3.DESIGNING OF RETAINER
- Retainer is a kind of washer fixed on the body of butterfly valve.
- Retainer helps to fix the shaft with the body of the butterfly valve. It prevents the shaft from coming out of the body and keeps it in position for the proper functioning of the disc inside the body.
Procedure
- Make a sketch as shown below image
- Extrude it 25mm.
- Now we apply Gd&t , So go drafting
- Apply the GD&T as shown below image.
Image of Retainer
4.DESIGNING OF DISC
- Disk is inside a shaft, that has been positioned inside the body of the butterfly valve.
- Disk is responsible to control the flow of the fluid.
Procedure
- Make a sketch as shown below image and Extrude it 6mm.
- The circle should be in smaller axis of Ellipse.
- Now we will apply Gd&t , So go drafting.
- Apply the GD&T as shown below image.
Image of DISC
5.DESIGNING OF LEVER
A lever is a handle that is used to rotate in order to regulate the flow.
Procedure
- Make a sketch as shown below image.
- We will extrude it 2 times since the thickness is different and unit them.
\
- Now we will apply Gd&t , So go drafting.
- Apply the GD&T as shown below image.
Image of LIVER
6-DESIGNING OF NUT
- It is fixed at the top end of shaft to keep the lever and retainer on position relative to the body of butterfly Valve
Procedure
- Make a sketch as shown below image and extrude 25mm.
- Draw another sketch in xy plane as shown below.
- Now we will revolve it along Y axis.
- Next we will apply Gd&t , So go drafting.
- Apply the GD&T as shown below image.

7-DESIGNING OF SCREW
Screw acts as fastners, used to fix Disc to the shaft and retainer to body
Procedure
- Make a sketch as shown below image and revolve it.
- Make a plane on XZ plane and it sholud be offset of 38mm.
- Draw another sketch shown below and extrude.
- Provide the chamfer and our screw is ready.

ASSEMBLY OF THE BUTTERFLY VALVE
- After the design, we will assemble all the component.
Features used to Assembly
- Infer center/axis
- Touch
- Align
Procedure
- First we will make one assembly file "BUTTERFLY VALVE"and add all the components. We will use the move command to move the object.
- Now 1st we will fix disc and screw with shaft using Infer center/axis and touch commands.
- Now we will fix shaft with body using Infer center/axis and touch commands.
- Next we will fix retainer plate to body and use 3 screw to fix using Infer center/axis and touch commands.
- Now fix the liver and nut with main body using Infer center/axis , align and touch commands.
IMAGE OF COMPLETE ASSEMBLY
All necessary constriants are applied.
- Now we will apply Gd&t , So go drafting.
- Apply the GD&T as shown below image.
