Week 11 Car Crash simulation

OBJECTIVE:-

  • To set the Car crash simulation in explicit dynamics analysis system with different surface thickness

Steps:-

Import model:-

  • Import the model from saved location and open it in space module check for abnormalities
  • In this case we will be using stainless steel non linear material for car body

Mechanical module:-

  • Rename the parts for convinience
  • Suppress the unnecessary geometry
  • Give the thickness as 0.3mm for car part and make it as parameter set
  • Now the variable will be set as parameter to see the results with different thickness
  • Delete the default connections

Mesh:-

  • Mesh the wall with tetrahedron elements
  • Mesh the car body with triangle elements
  • Perform face sizing on the faces where the contact does not occur
  • Increase the element size to 175mm so that the computational time will be decreased
  • Fully meshed model is shown below

Create Symmetry:-

  • Right click on model>insert> Symmetry
  • Symmetry Folder will be created, now insert symmetry region for Car and wall in respectieve direction

Analysis Settings:-

  • Set the end time as 0.001 sec
  • Let all the other settings be same

Define load:-

  • Define fixed support for the car parts where the contacts wont happen

  • Define a Displacement load of 500mm on wall in Global Z direction
  • Request the above mentioned output
  • After the simulation is finished parameter set the rquired outputs
  • Go back to workbec=nch module , now we can see parameter set
  • Open the parameter set module and enter different thickness value
  • after entering all the thickness value use update all design points option to solve for the output in different case

Results and Conclusion:

Case 1(0.3mm thickness):-

  • Total deformation
  • Equivalent Stress

Case 2(0.6mm thickness):-

  • Total deformation
  • Equivalent Stress

Case 3(0.9mm thickness):-

  • Total deformation
  • Equivalent Stress

Case 4(1.2mm thickness):-

  • Total deformation
  • Equivalent Stress
  • The tabular data of above results are shown below
  • From the above data we can see the stress is more in lesser thickness body
  • Deformation is also high in case 1
  • When the thickness increases the stress induced gets reduced
  • In the same way if thickness increased the deformation will be reduced
