Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Objective: To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body and analyse the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

Setting up the analysis: The geometry is imported and opened in ANSYS mechanical. The material assigned to car body is stainless steel NL. 2 parts are suppressed as they are not visible.

The contacts which were assigned but ANSYS were deleted.

As the model is symmetrical in nature, the symmetry option is added and the faces were selected where symmetry is present

Mesh:

The wall is meshed with tetrahedron elements

Then face sizing is used to mesh surfaces

Tria elemets are use to entire car body to reduce simulation time

Boundary conditions:

Solution:

For conducting parametric study, the thickness is changed for different cases, for this parametric option is selected at the thickness

Case 1:

For thickness 0.3mm

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Case 2:

For thickness 0.5mm

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Case 3:

For thickness 0.7mm

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Results :

Thickness(mm) Deformation(mm) Equivalent stress(MPa)
0.3 885 6689
0.5 884 6682
0.7 882 6672

Conclusion:

The following simulation is performed and results are found out using parametric study
