Week 11 Car Crash simulation
OBJECTIVE:-
To run the simulation for car crash and obtain various results required. A total of 3 cases has to be performed using parametric settings.
Case 1 : Thickness to be 0.3 mm
Case 2 : Thickness to be 0.5 mm
Case 3 : Thickness to be 0.6 mm
PROCEDURE FOLLOWED:
Create a new Explicit dynamics module, and assign a new material Stainless steel NL to it for further simulation.
Stainless steel NL.

Import the geometry and check for any discrepancies if no errors are found in the model, open the model in mechanical workbench and proceed.

Rename the geometry, Wall & Car body
The rest of the two materials doesn’t have any purpose to the model, so suppress both of them.
Assign material and thickness to Car body,
Material = Stainless steel NL,
Thickness =0.3 mm , 0.5 & 0.6 mm (according to three cases)

No contacts & body interaction – frictionless

After the contacts and body interaction, Mesh the model.
Wall = tetrahedron

Car body sizing = coarse to non contactable part

As the model is in half portion, thus applying symmetry to both wall and the car body,
Applying symmetry region to the wall

Applying symmetry region for the car body

Analysis setting has to be done for simulation
End time = 0.001

Assign fixed support to the car body, select faces and assign it to fixed.

Also assign displacement to the wall, the magnitude of the displacement to be given as 500 mm.

List out all the results required from the simulation. For this model we will be requiring total deformation and equivalent stress.

After commanding for all the output results, we will be tabulating for all the 3 case for thickness 0.3, 0.5 & 0.6
Case 1:- Thickness = 0.3
Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Case 2:- Thickness = 0.5
Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:

Case 3:- Thickness = 0.6
Total deformation:

Equivalent stress:
