Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Aim :

To do car crash analysis for the given model by using ANSYS software.

Objective :

To do analysis for three different thickness property to the car outer body. Here we do frontal impact test for the given model.

Procedure :

We start from workbench and choose explicit dynamics to perform the analysis.

From explicit dynamics we add the material property in engineering data tab.

Import the given geometry to the geometry tab. We can go through the geometry using edit spaceclaim.

We set the model for analysis we move to mechanical module by using edit model.

We rename the geometry and assign the material property as it asked to assign.

And here we define three different thickness property to the outer car body for comparing the results.

We have of half portion of the geometry and we do symmetry for the other half to do the analysis.

We mesh the given component for default values and the outer car body is defined as triangles.

In analysis settings we set the end time as 0.001 and rest all will be in default.

We fix the car and displace the barrier towards the car front face for a value of 500 mm.

After this we solve the analysis to get the required solution values.

Total deformation,

Equivalent stress,

Equivalent plastic strain.

Case 1 : 1 mm thickness,

Total deformation,

Equivalent stress,

Equivalent plastic strain.

Case 2 : 3 mm thickness,

Total deformation,

Equivalent stress,

Equivalent plastic strain.

Case 3 : 5 mm thickness.

Total deformation,

Equivalent stress,

Equivalent plastic strain.

Conclusion :

We ran the analysis for three different cases with three different thickness values and got the required solution values tabulated below.

Cases / solution

Total deformation

Equivalent stress

Equivalent plastic strain

1mm thickness

1001.4 mm

2126.3Mpa

0.82849mm

2mm thickness

975.76 mm

2160Mpa

0.75956mm

3mm thickness

958.48 mm

2169.7Mpa

0.72252mm

From the above table values we can conclude that the given model deforms large when the thickness is small and when the thickness is large the deformation is small. Car outer body is an sheet metal component so the thickness assignement is lessthan 6mm. When thickness increases hardness also increases so the resistance to encounter stress incereases.

Result :

The given model car crash simulation is done successfully using ANSYS software.
