Week 11 Car Crash simulation
Objective:
The aim of this challenge is to simulate the situation of a car crash. The challenge involves 3 cases - a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. The equivalent stress and total deformation are to be determined.
Case setup and execution:
First the explicit dynamics module was opened. Then the required material stainless steel NL was added to the library. Then the model was imported into the module.
Then the Ansys Mechanical was opened. The parts were renamed as Carbody and Wall respectively. The Carbody was assigned the Stainless steel NL material, while the wall was assigned Structural steel. The thickness of carbody was kept 0.3mm, which was parameterised.
The existing contacts were deleted since in the explicit analysis the collision of the objects is the main focus.
The body interaction was kept unchanged.
Then 2 symmetries were inserted - 1 about the face of the wall and the other about the edge of the carbody.
In the meshing, the carbody was provided the default element size of 56 mm. Also the faces at the back of the carbody were given face sizing of 175 mm. The model was then meshed.
In the analysis settings, the end time was provided as 0.001 seconds.
The faces at the back of the carbody were provided a fixed support. The wall was given the displacement of 500 mm in positive Z direction.
The output was requested for equivalent stress as well as total deformation. Their maximum values were parameterised.
Then the model was run. It ran smoothly.

Conclusion:
Thus the comparison of all the 3 cases has been presented in the form of the parametric study. The setup and execution of the model is successfull. The simulation files are attached in the zip format with the report.
