Week 11 Car Crash simulation

Car Crash simulation

Objective:

To perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. You need to apply the same conditions as mentioned in the video that corresponds to this challenge. Analyse the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

Geometry file:

Properties of Material Used:

Mesh file:

As we are focused on the front portion of the car crash in this simulation choose a refine mesh element size and on the rear part of the body with a higher mesh size.

For the wall choose tetrahedrons are the method of meshing and triangles for the car body.

Symmetry region:

Wall and Car bodies are created as two different symmetry regions and thickness of car body is chosen to be 0.3mm.

Analysis setup:

As we are focused on explicit dynamics of the car crash in this simulation we aren’t focused on the connections and joints as explicit dynamics deals with events that happen in a short duration of time.

In explicit dynamics the simulation mainly focuses on mesh size and the end time duration and the energy factor.

For the simulation to go through choose car body as fixed support and the wall with a displacement of 500mm/s.

Simulation Results:

Parametric Study:

Performed a parametric study to study the different thicknesses of sheet metals for the car body with 0.3,0.4,0.5 and are tabulated.

Conclusion:

The total deformation and the equivalent stress of the thickness of 0.3mm have the maximum value. When increasing the thickness, we can find that the deformation is decreasing because of the decrement of ductile nature which increases the hardness of the car body. It also influences the stress to reduce during the increase of thickness.
