Challenge

Week 11 Car Crash simulation

AIM:

To simulate the Car Crash simulation for their total deformation, stress and strain using ansys workbench.

OBJECTIVES:

For this challenge, you will have to perform a parametric study using 3 different values of thickness for the car body. You need to apply the same conditions as mentioned in the video that corresponds to this challenge.Analyse the total deformation and Equivalent stresses acting on the model.

PROCEDURES:

  • Drop the Explicit dynamics from the analysis settings.
  • Allocate the required material from the engineering data.
  • Then import the geometry, then open the model.

Materials:

Structural steel

Structural steel NL

Geometry:

  • First change the default name to WALL and CAR BODY.
  • Assign the selected material for geometry parts.

WALL - Structural steel

CAR BODY - Structural steel NL

Connections

In this simulation delete all contacts.

Symmetry:

  • Insert the symmetry region, choose one side of the wall.
  • Again insert the symmetry region, choose CAR BODY edge, use edge selector.

Mesh:

  • Now open the mesh, use default size.
  • Insert the sizing, choose some faces from CAR BODY, use face selector.
  • Mesh size is 50mm.
  • Insert the method, choose WALL and method is tetrahedron.
  • Insert the method, choose CAR BODY and a method is triangles.

Boundary conditions:

  • Now Explicit dynamics, insert the displacement, choose a WALL.
  • The WALL is travel in Z axis so Z component is 500mm, remaning components Y & Z are constant
  • Then insert the fixed support, choose some side of the CAR BODY .

End time = 0.001

No of Steps = 1

Soluitions:

  • After giving proper boundary conditions, create desired solutions for output results, create solutions for total deformation, stress and strain. slove evaluate for solutions.

Results:

Case_1: 0.3

Total Deformation And Graph

Equivalent Stress And Graph

Case_2: 0.5

Equivalent Stress And Graph

Total Deformation And Graph

Case_3: 0.8

Total Deformation And Graph

Equivalent Stress And Graph

Results:

Case_1: 0.3

Case_2: 0.5

Case_3: 0.8

Conclusion:

To simulate the Car Crash simulation running successfully. According to the simulation use three different car body thickness, thats are 0.3,0.5 and 0.8. In this simulation we can increase a car boidy thickness, the result was decrease compare to the less car body thickness.
