Week 10 - Challenge 2- Attachment Feature Creation (Dog House)
REPORT ON DOG HOUSE DESIGN
AIM
The aim of this design is make a solid body from given class-A surface and then create the dog houses on the body. Also do the draft analysis on both class-A surface and final component.
INTRODUCTION
The dog-house is an engineering feature used in the plastic trim design that is used as a supporting feature. Sometimes other engineering features like snaps; locators etc. are mounted on them to increase their strength. Usually, this engineering component is built on the B-surface and is subjected to draft analysis to prevent breakage of the component during ejection from the mould cavity.
Design Methodology
- Create the Tooling axis
- Design the class-B and class-C surfaces and join them.
- Use the Close Surface feature to make a solid body from the surface.
- Design the required dog house and analysis them.
- Perform the Draft analysis for the final component.
Given Class-A Surface -

Draft analysis on class-A Surface -

Create the Tooling axis -
Class-A surface is first analyzed to create the tooling axis. where the molds pull apart in injection molding. Tooling direction is essential for plastic product design as it decides the direction for mold separation.
To create the tooling axis first we have to check the best suitable direction for tooling by using the compass and then create tooling axis -

Design the class-B and class-C surfaces -
After creating the tooling axis we create class-B surface from class-A surface by offsetting it.

Then create Class-C surface -

Use the Close Surface feature to make a solid body from the surface -
After creating the Class-B and Class-C surfaces we make a closed body for create the solid body.

Then we create solid Body -

- Design the required dog house and analysis them -
Dog house: Dog house is an engineering feature used in the plastic trim design. Dog houses are used as supporting features. Sometimes other engineering features like snaps; locators, etc. are mounded on them to increase their strength. Dog house and other engineering Features are built on B-surface.
Design rules for Dog house creation

"C" is where the doghouse contacts the backside of the surface
Doghouse wall thickness at the intersection of the part wall ( C ) should be 40% or less than the main wall stock ( T ).
The height of ( B ) should be between 3.0 – 6.0 mm

- Perform the Draft analysis for the final component -

Different Views of Final Component -

CONCLUSION
We have discussed about Dog House and it application. we have also seen the procedure to create dog house and do draft analysis on class-A surface and final component.
