Challenge

Week 10 - Challenge 2- Attachment Feature Creation (Dog House)

AIM

To Create the Dog House for the Door Trim considering the design rules through the given Class-A surface.

THEORY

Tooling Axis

Tooling Axis is the direction in which the mold or core and cavity opens and closes. While designing a component first thing is to define the tooling axis.

Procedure

  • Check the connectivity of given Class A Surface i.e no gaps between the surfaces.
  • Analyse the component along x,y,z direction and check which is the best possible tooling direction (Here Y)
  • Create a point at flat surface by extracting it.
  • Draw a line perpendicular to extracted flat surface through the point and that is the tooling axis.
Tool axis by bisecting method
Check the connectivity of the given Class A surface, i.e. no gaps between the surfaces.
Analyze the part in x, y, z direction and check which is the best possible tool direction (here Y)
Create a point on the base surface by extracting it.
Create an axis system with this point as the origin.
Create a class A intersection in the xy axis
Create two lines referring to the surfaces we think will cause problems.
Create a bisecting line with the drawn lines, which will give us the axis of the tool.
Lateral core axis Here, when creating the inner part of the Dog House, we do not clean the chamfer with the main axis of the tool, so in order to clean the direction of the chamfer, we introduce the tool axis from the side that is perpendicular to the face, which does not clear the chamfer in the direction of the main axis of the tool.
Design analysis
Drawing Analysis is used to analyze whether the part model created in CAD id is manufacturable based on the applied design condition.
All parts require a pull in the direction of mold movement in order for the parts to properly release or eject from the mold. Most parts or applications require a minimum
Method First, change the view to "Customize View Parameters" and select the Material option.
Select Element Design Analysis from the toolbar.
Click on the direction, drag the compass on the component to match the tool axis.
Lock the bevel direction and click the component.
Green color indicates positive draft, cyan as zero degrees and red as negative draft.

Class A Surface: Class A surface is any of a set of freeform surfaces of high efficiency and quality. In other words, Class A surface is the aesthetic surface.

Class B Surface: Class B surface is the thickened suface or engineering surface where all ribs, screw bosses, dog houses etc will come.

Class C Surface: It is the Surface which joins Class A and Class B surfaces.

Class A Surface

The given Class A Surface is not clearing draft fully, it has some negative draft in some of the areas. So we have to inform the Stylilng team about this, but for this challenge purpose we are proceeding with this surface.
