Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge
Bucket-Bullet
Aim
To model a simple bucket-bullet system and determine strains and stresses.
Procedure
- Start a new explicit dynamics model in ansys and import the model
- Add the materials as shown.

- Open this model in ansys mechanical.
- Assign Tantalum to the bullet and Aluminium Alloy/Magnesium alloy/Stainless steel to the bucket (3 different cases)
- Set the bullet to rigid

- Create sizing of 6mm on the edges.

- Generate the mesh.

- Define the displacement as -13900 mm/s along X axis and set y/z to 0.

- Define fixed support for the workpiece.

Analysis Settings
Set the analysis settings as shown.

Set your output blocks as shown

For the other 2 NL cases, change the material of the bucket and rerun the simulation
Post Processing
Case 1: Stainless Steel-NL

Case 2: Aluminium Alloy NL

Case:3 Magnesium Alloy NL

Tabulated Results
|
Case |
Stainless Steel |
Aluminium |
Magnesium |
|
Maximum Stress (MPa) |
3060.1 |
1075.4 |
2263.7 |
|
Maximum Deformation (mm) |

141.48 |
|
Elastic Strain |
0.020555 |
0.016794 |
0.050304 |
Since magnesium is a softer material, it can be seen that deformation and elastic strainis higher compared to Stainless Steel or Aluminium.
it can be seen that stresses experienced is maximum in the case of Stainless Steel and minimum in Aluminium.
Conclusion
In this project, a simple bucket and bullet setup was modelled and simulated using 3 different Non linear Materials in the Ansys Library.
After simulating their results (Stresses, deformations and strains) were compared and tabulated accordingly.
