Objective:
To simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket using 3 different non linear materials for the bucket.
To analyse the behaviour of the three materials for the same velocity of bullet
Introduction:
This project is about simulating a bullet penetrating into a bucket using 3 different non-linear materials for the bucket. The bucket is fixed and the bullet will be moving at a given velocity to pierce the bucket.
Procedure for setup
Open ANSYS>>Drag and Explicit dynamics model in the project schematic window.
Go to the engineering data to choose the materials: Let’s work with Aluminium alloy NL, Copper alloy NL, Stainless Steel NL.
Go to the model tab
Rename the different as required

Go to connection >> contacts
Delete the default contacts
Go to tab for the meshing:
For the meshing choose the values as follows:

The following analysis settings are defined for the simulation.

Set a fixed support for the bucket.

Set the velocity of the bullet.

Go to solution tab and insert equivalent stress, total deformation and Plastic equivalent strain.
Results and comparison
Case1 : Using Aluminium alloy NL
Equivalent Stress

Total Deformation

Equivalent plastic Strain

Case 2 : Using Copper alloy NL
Equivalent Stress

Total Deformation

Equivalent plastic Strain

Case 3 : Using Stainless Steel NL
Equivalent Stress

Total Deformation

Equivalent plastic Strain

Conclusion
Through this simulation, we notice that Equivalent stress is high when using stainless steel NL and low when using aluminium alloy NL whereas the total deformation remains the same regardless the materials used for the bucket.
