Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

AIM: The main aim of this week challenge is to perform a explicit dynamic simulation of a bullet penetrating into a bucket. The analysis is performed for three cases for different material of aluminium, steel and titanium. Then compare the results of the stress, strain and deformation plots with a detailed explanation for the plots.

PROCEDURE:

step 1: Open the ansys workbench module and select the transient structural analysis.

step 2: Now open the engineering data and add Steel 1006,Al 1100,Titanium in the explicit materials section.

step 3: Right click the geomentry tab and select import geomentry --> browse --> select the file --> open.

step 4: Now open the geomentry in mechanical modeller.

step 5: Now assign the material for both bucket and bullet.

step 6: Now mesh the component with a refined mesh on the line where the bullet makes contact with the bucket.

step 7: Now create a contact between the bullet and bucket with body interface.

step 8: Now cange the analysis settings.

step 9: Now assign the velocity to bullet and fixed support to the base of the bucket.

step 10: Now run the simulation.

step 11: Now include the total deformation,Equivalent stress and strain in output files.

step 12: Now change the model as per the question and run the simulation

Step 13: Compare the result plot and give a detailed explanation

step 14: Now repeat the above step for two other material for the bucket

step 15: After getting the result, compare and give a detailed explanation for the result.

OUTPUT REQUEST:

CASE: 1

CASE: 2

CASE: 3

CONCLUSION:

EQUIVAENT STRESS TOTAL DEFORMATION PLASTIC STRAIN
ALUMINIUM 126.96 750 1.41
STEEL 353.7 750 1.4799
NICKEL 674.65 745.82 1.4796

Based on the above result, The equivalent stress is maximum in case 3 and it is lowest in case 1.This is because the young's modulus is highest in nickel when compared to aluminium. The total deformation is almost the same for all the three cases since the bullet travels with a very high velocity so it penetrates the bucket and travels almost the same distance in all the three cases. The plastic strain is maximum in case 2 and lowest in case 1.
