Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Aim of the project:

To perform the Explicit dynamics simulation for a bullet penetrating into a bucket model, Capture Total deformation, Equivalent stress, and strain.

Compare the results in varied condition of 3 different Non-Linear materials for the bucket.

Set Up

  1. In the Ansys workbench we chose Explicit dynamics and in engineering data we added the material Tantalum, Aluminum 1100.
  2. After Importing the Bullet and Bucket model in the Geometry, we opened it in SpceClaim and checked for any abnormalities.
  3. Once we opened the model in Mechanical module, we renamed it and assigned Tantalum material to the Bullet and changed stiffness behavior as rigid for the same. For the case 1 we have assigned AL-1100 for bucket.
  4. We have deleted the existing Bonded contacts and kept body interactions-Frictionless as it is under connections.
  5. In the meshing we used minimum possible 3.5mm element size under Edge sizing for Bucket.
  6. In analysis settings we kept all data as it is except End time and added 0.01 as end time.

7. Added a fixed support to the bottom face of the bucket.

8. Added Component velocity of 139000 mm/s to the Bullet in X Direction as shown below.

9.Finally, we requested for desired solutions and got the results as shown below.

Total deformation : - Maximum : 1390. mm

Von-mises Stress : - Maximum : 216.81 MPa

Case: 2

In case 2 we have changed the materials for the bucket as Copper Alloy NL having below shown properties.

And found the results as shown below.

Total deformation : - Maximum : 1390. mm

Von-mises Stress : - Maximum : 709.72 MPa

Case: 3

In case 3 we have changed the materials for the bucket as Stainless steel NL having below shown properties.

And found the results as shown below.

Total deformation : - Maximum : 1390. mm

Von-mises Stress : - Maximum : 2605.9 MPa

Conclusion

Material of Bucket

Directional Deformation (Max.)

Max. Von-mises Stress (Mpa)

Aluminum

1390. mm

216.81 MPa

Copper alloy NL

1390. mm

709.72 MPa

Stainless Steel NL

1390. mm

2605.9 MPa

In case of Non linear materials Stress increased drastically, Stress was very high when we used Stainless steel non linear material.
