Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

Objective:

To simulate a bullet penetrating a bucket by using three different non-linear materials for the bucket at the same velocity of the bullet.

Setup:

First step is to add the materials from the non linear engineering sources. We select the materials Aluminium, Copper, Stainless Steel and Tantalum. Once the materials are added we import the geometry and open in spaceclaim to check for any abnormalities. Once that is done we open the model in the mechanical module and assign the parts name Bucket and Bullet. We assign the material Tantalum for bullet and other materials are assigned for bucket for various cases. Also make the bullet a rigid body. Once that is done we move onto contacts and delete the default contacts, make sure the body interaction is set to firctionless. Moving onto meshing we give a sizing to bucket of 15mm and a patch conforming method using tetrahedrons. After that goin inot analysis setting we give the end time to be 0.01 and leave all the settings as default. Now we give a fixed support to the lower surface on the bucket and velocity in the x direction of 139000 mm/s for the bullet. For solution add Equivalent Stress and total deformation.

Case 1 Aluminium :

Total deformation:

The maximum amount of deformation on the bucket occured where the bullet exits the bucket at 91.754mm.

Equivalent stress:

The maximum amount of equivalent stress also occured at the point where the bullet exits the bucket at 451.56 MPa.

Case 2 Stainless Steel:

Total Deformation:

The total deformation is at 11091mm due to a fragment of the bucket flying away.

Equivalent Stress:

The maximum amount of stress occured at the entry point of the bullet at 1442.7 MPa.

Case 3 Copper:

Total Deformation:

The maximum deformation occured at 1719.9 mm.

Equivalent Stress:

The maximum amount of stress is developed at the enterance of the bullet in the bucket at 876.71 MPa.

Conclusion:

Material Aluminium Stainless Steel Copper
Total Deformation(mm) 91.754 11091 1719.9
Equivalent Stress (MPa) 451.56 1442.7 876.71

The maximum amount of stress is produced by Stainless steel followed by Copper and last by Aluminium. The same order also goes for the toal deformation. The higher deformation occured in stainless steel and copper is due to particles broke away.
