Challenge

Week 10 Bullet penetrating a Bucket Challenge

AIM:

To simulate the Bullet penetrating a Bucket for their total deformation, stress and strain using ansys workbench.

OBJECTIVES:

For this challenge, you will have to simulate a bullet penetrating into a bucket. You will need to use 3 different non linear materials for the bucket and analyse their behaviour for the same velocity of bullet. Apply the conditions for bullet as mentioned in the video itself. Upload animation files to show the behaviour in the three cases.

Case-1: Copper Alloy NL

Case-2: Magnesium Alloy NL

Case-3: Titanium Alloy NL

PROCEDURES:

  • Drop the Explicit dynamics from the analysis settings.
  • Allocate the required material from the engineering data.
  • Then import the geometry, then open the model.

Materials:

BUCKET

COPPER ALLOY

MAGNESIUM ALLOY

TITANIUM ALLOY

BULLET

TANTALUM

Geometry:

  • First change the default name to BUCKET and BULLET.
  • Assign the selected material for geometry parts.
  • Then change the stiffness behavior is a Rigid, for BULLET.

BUCKET - According to challenge used three non linear material

BULLET - TANTALUM

Connections

In this simulation delete all contacts.

Mesh:

  • Now open the mesh, use default size.
  • Insert the sizing, choose 2 edge from BUCKET.
  • Mesh size is 6mm.

Boundary conditions:

  • Now Explicit dynamics, insert the velocity, choose a BULLET.
  • The BULLET is travel in -X axis so X component is -139000mm/s, remaning components Y & Z are constant
  • Then insert the fixed support, choose bottom side of the BUCKET.

End time = 1e-2

No of Steps = 1

Soluitions:

  • After giving proper boundary conditions, create desired solutions for output results, create solutions for total deformation, stress and strain. slove evaluate for solutions.

Conclusion

To simulate the Bullet penetrating a Bucket running successfully, in this simulation use three different materials, thats are Copper Alloy NL, Magnesium Alloy NL, Titanium Alloy NL.Total deformation is same in all three cases. Titanium alloy, stress is higher, which means plastic deformation of the material is large, so the resistance to the penetration will also be higher. so, due to high strength and high density, it gives less penetration givess less damage.
