Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

OBJECTIVE:

Model and simulate two plates with holes against provided design and simulation parameters and compare the results.

PROBLEM STATEMENTS:

CASE-1 CASE-2
PLATE DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
Length 300mm 300mm
Height 120mm 120mm
Thickness 30mm 30mm
Circular hole at the center 60mm 60mm
Small holes 90mm away from center NA 30mm
BOUNDARY CONDITIONS Plate fixed at left face Plate fixed at left face
Load of 500 N on right face Load of 500 N on right face

MATERIAL USED:

The material used for this simulation is structural steel.

SIMULATION RESULTS:

1. DEFORMATION:

2. VON-MISES STRESS:

DESIGN SELECTION - ANALYSIS POINT OF VIEW:

DEFORMATION (mm) CASE 1 CASE 2
Maximum Deformation 0.000275 0.000409
DEFORMATION (mm) Maximum and average deformation values are lesser than compared to case-2:
VON-MISES STRESS (MPa) CASE 1 CASE 2
Maximum Stress 0.605910 0.802110
VON-MISES STRESS (MPa) Maximum and average Von-Mises stress values are lesser than compared to case-2.
DESIGN SELECTION - ANALYSIS POINT OF VIEW As per the simulation results the Case-1 design should be selected. Since, lower values of stress and deformation implies lower stress concentration and resistance to deformation thus less chances component failure.

DESIGN SELECTION - MANUFACTURING POINT OF VIEW:

PLATE DESIGN SPECIFICATIONS
DESIGN SELECTION - MANUFACTURING POINT OF VIEW Component in Case-1 is easier to manufacture as it will require lesser number of operation to be performed on it as compared to Case-2. Moreover, the Component-1 strength is greater than Component-2 because it will have more material than latter.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

  1. Run siulation studies using 'Static Structural' block in ANSYS.
  2. Compare designs using results from simulation.
  3. COmponent selection for manufacturing.
