Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Objective:-

To design the two Case based model. After the modelling of the two plates stress and deformation is to be calculated and compared. Post calculation which will be the best design has to be selected.

The material selected for both the cases are Structural steel having

Young’s modulus : 2e+05 MPa

Poissons’ ratio : 0.3

Density : 7.85e-06 kg/mm3

CASE 1

Design the required model with the given parameters.

Plate dimensions:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

Opening the workbench and designing the model in spaceclaim.

After the design in spaceclaim, meshing the model in mechanical ANSYS workbench. The mesh size in my model I have given as 6 mm. After the meshing giving static structural parameters to the model. Fixing the left side of the model and applying a force of 500 N to the right side of the mode.

After this requesting for solutions by assigning the stress result and deformation result.

Deformation result is obtained as follows:

The maximum deformation obtained by applying the force of 500 N to the model is 0.00027492mm After the deformation proceeding to calculate the equivalent stress.

Equivalent stress:

The max equivalent stress obtained for the model is 0.60054 MPa.

After the case 1 case 2 is to be done.

CASE 2

Designing the model in space-claim with the following parameters.

Plate dimensions:

Length=300mm
Height=120mm
Thickness=30mm
Circular Hole at the center:
Diameter=60mm

smaller holes 90mm away from the center:

Diameter=30mm
Boundary Conditions:
Plate fixed at left face.
Load of 500N on the right face.

Applying load of 500 N to the right side of the model. Also fixing the left side of the model.

Equivalent stress calculated as:

The maximum stress induce in the model with 3 holes is 0.57737 MPa

Total deformation in the model:

The max deformation in the plate with 3 holes is obtained as 0.00029739 mm.

Plate with 1 hole

Plate with 3 holes

Stress

0.60054

0.57737

Deformation

0.00027492

0.00029739

On comparing both the plates it can be noted that the plate with 1 hole induces more stress than the plate with 3 holes. The stress induced in case 1 is only at single hole, so there is tendency o failure due to fatigue is more at case 1. Thus from an analysis stand point it can be concluded that case 2 plate with 3 holes is best suited for any design.

On the other hand when both the case were considered from manufacturing stand point it can be concluded that the plate with one hole has to be selected. The reason for it being to manufacture the plate with 3 holes a complex machine, man has to be engaged which will be attained from a great cost. So from Manufacturing standpoint plate with 1 hole will be selected.
