Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

Simulate the two cases and compare its deformation and maximum stress results

Case 1

Stress Concentration on plate with one hole

In this case the deformation and stress in a plate (L=300mm, B=120mm, T=30mm) with a hole of 60mm diameter at the geomentric center of the plate is analysed in ANSYS Workbench software by fixing left side face and applying 500N tensile force on the right side face . Model is designed in Spaceclaim.

The meshing is done in ANSYS with an element size of 2mm and a patch confirmation method using Tetrohedrons was selected.

Case 2

Stress Concentration on plate with three holes

In second case more two holes of 30mm diameter are introduced on the eighter side of the center hole with 90mm distance from center and as Case 1 boundary conditions are applied.

The meshing is done in ANSYS with an element size of 2mm and a patch confirmation method using Tetrohedrons was selected.

Result

Now compare the results of both cases

  • Equivalent Stress
Case Min(Mpa) Max(Mpa)
1 0.0067343 0.6052
2 0.0010693 0.58096

Here we can see more stress is produced in case 1 compared to case 2

  • Total deformation
    Case Min(mm) Max(mm)
    1 0 0.00027492
    2 0 0.00029728

Here we can see more deformation of length in case 2 compared to case 1

Conclusion

1) The Total Deformation in the case 2 is more compared to case1. In case2 more material is removed for two more hole which decreses the tensile strength of the model.

2)The Maximum Equivalent Stress is more in case1 compared to case2. in case2 due to the addition of holes the stress is distributed thoughout the model, as there is only 1 hole in the case 1 stress concentration is more hence more Max Equivalent stress in case1

3) From the Analysis Standpoint, i will select case2 because the distribution of stress concentration points are more and less elements and has less Max equavelent stress for same amount of tensile force. And in case 2 we will get more accuracy

4) From Manufacturer Standpoint case1 has been selected because less material is drilled and less manufacturing process is required. But comparing above cases time required for manufacturing of case 2 would also be very less when compared to case 1
