Project - 2 - Meshing on the suspension Assembly

Aim:  Meshing on the suspension Assembly

Procedure:

  • Import the given file in ANSA file
  • Select geometry check
  • If any errors found clear them by performing required actions
  • According to criteria mesh the components

Tyre

  • Select tyre component and and give mesh parameters
  • Give mesh criteria and apply mesh on the PID region
  • After mesh is generated check for off elements and clear the off elements
  • After all failing elelments are cleared now apply volume mesh
  • First define the visible PID object
  • Then apply tetra rapid and select the part
  • Give collapse criteria as 0.2
  • And also check for failing elements

Rim

  • Follow the same procedure as mentioned for tyre

Suspension Assembly

  • Check whole parts and apply geometry check and remove the errors that are popped up
  • Check each part and apply required meshing methods
  • If thickness is less than 5mm then go for 2d meshing
  • If thickness is greater than 5mm and having uniform thickness then try for 2d meshing
  • If thickness is greater than 5mm and having non-uniform thickness go for 3d meshing
  • According to above methods give mesh parameters and mesh criteria and apply mesh on components
  • Create new PID for required components
  • After surface meshing is done for 3d mesh method and all off or failing elements  are eliminated now go for volume meshing.
  • First give define for part and then apply volumetric mesh and apply tetra rapid method and also eleiminate failing componets if appeared
  • This is how 3d mesh is done for components
  • When it comes for 2d meshing components in whole file, only 2 parts are selected i.e shockabsorber bottom cylinder and hinge where weld connection shoould be given
  • Generate midsurface for thos components and apply mesh as given and eleiminate the failing elements and give thickness for them
  • Go to mesh parameters and select convert shell as solid
  • This is how 2d meshing is done

Connections

  • In whole assembly connections for parts should be given for better simulations
  • For tyre and rim rigid connection is given
  • Go to Nastran deck select RBE2 in elements and select the nodes for which rigid connection should be given
  • Apply the same method wherever required
  • Suspension arm end requires bolted connection for that first select the one whole nodes and give rigid connection and  for other open whole give rigid connection
  • Later go to RBE2 and select two nodes and select the two master and and apply
  • This is how bolted connection is given
  • For spring 1d connection should be given
  • For spring 1d connection first extract middle curve for the  part
  • Later connect all curves to one curve
  • Find COG for this curve
  • Select Pbar in elements in nastran deck and select curve and COG point and give element size as 3mm
  • Give specified PID for this 1d element and go to mesh criteria manager and select 1d elements as solid
  • After that give rigid connection for Pbar and plate for which spring is connected , do same method at bottom side of spring also
  • Later weld connection is to be givven for hinge and damper
  • Here first convert the cone of hinge to curve
  • The con that is selected should be the place where weld is captured
  • Covert the curve that is created into seamline weld through connection manager
  • And go to connection manager and select seam line and press middle mouse  button
  • Now select tha parts for which weld should be captured and and also give weld type
  • The weld type should be overlap shell and give search distance
  • Give new PID as required
  • Also give weld width and step lenght that is required
  • Select apply and select realise now we can see the weld connection is given

Symmetry

  • After all mesh methods are performed and all failing elements are removed apply symmetry option and select the required components
  • First go to tranform and select copy and go to symmetry and slect 3nodes  method
  • Later select the 3 nodes from where symmetry should be performed
  • Now select the components from where symmetry is done and having connected parts
  • Now try deleting the common parts and again create the face so that it will be as a single componet
  • Now for the edited component mesh will be erased so remesh fo that part and again given mesh paramters
  • This is how whole meshing, connections and symmetry is given

Learning outcomes

  • Learnt how to select mesh methos for different components
  • Learnt how to give connection and type of connection
  • Learnt why meshing shouldbe done and why failing elements should be eliminated

Conclusion

  • Midsurface extraction and meshing for required components is done
  • 3d meshing and volume meshing is done
  • 1d ,2d connections are also given at required places
