Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

OBJECTIVES

Design a plate with one hole three holes and find the deformation and equivalent stress of the plate

Case 1

Design a plate with a hole model similar to what we worked in the class but with increased thickness .Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model

Plate Dimension

Length - 300mm

Height - 120mm

Thickness - 30mm

Circular Hole at the center Diameter = 60mm

Case 2 Plate with one hole

Plate Dimension

Length - 300mm

Height - 120mm

Thickness - 30mm

Circular Hole at the center

Diameter - 60mm

The above model is created in space claim and the material is selected as structural steel.

Mesh

Mesh the model with the element size 7.5 and it is tetragonal shape mesh

Total Deformation

One side of the plate is fixed and other side is given load of 500N

The max deformation will be 2.6506e-4mm

Equivalent Strain

The max stress developed at the center hole is 0.2872

Case 2 Plate with three holes

Model

Length -300mm

Height - 120mm

Thickness - 30mm

Circular hole at the center :

Diameter - 60mm

Small holes 90mm away from the center with dia 30mm

The above model is created in Spaceclaim and the material is selected as structural steel

Mesh

Mesh the model with the element size 7.5 and it is a tetragonal shape mesh

Total Deformation

One side of the plate is fixed and other side is given load of 500N

The max deformation will be 2.9715e4mm

Equivalent Stress

The max stress developed at the center hole is 0.5702 Mpa

Result and Conclusion

Plate with one hole Plate with two hole

Max deformation 2.6506e-4mm 2.9715e-4mm

Min deformation 0 0

Max Equivalent Stress 0.57346Mpa 0.5702 Mpa
