Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

AIM: To calculate Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

PROCEDURE:

  • First open the ANSYS workbench and select the Statcic Structural system to perfrom the analysis.
  • Plate dimensions:

    Length=300mm
    Height=120mm
    Thickness=30mm
    Diameter=60mm

  • Boundary Condition:

    Plate fixed at left face.
    Load of 500N on the right face.

CASE 1 : Design a plate with a hole model, but with increased thickness. Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.

  • Plate With hole:

  • Meshing:

  • After creating a mesh, the boundary conditions were defined as fixed at the left side and applied 500 N load on the right side.
  • In the solution selected Total deformation and Equivalent stress.

RESULTS:

Total deformation:

  • Maximum deformation is 0.00027493 mm

Equivalent stress:

  • Maximum stress developed on the plate is 0.59453 Mpa

CASE 2: Design a plate with three hole model, but with increased thickness. Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.

  • Plate with three holes: (Dimensions are given)

  • Meshing:

  • Mesh is created , Now we will fixed the one surface and apply the force to the other surface.
  • The force is to be applies is 500N
  • And select the results as Total deformation and stress.

Results:

Total deformation:

  • Maximum deformation is 0.0002973 mm

Equivalent stress:

  • Maximum stress developed on the plate is 0.57291 Mpa

Comparison:

TYPE: Maximum deformation (mm) Maximum stress developed (MPa)
Plate with a hole 0.00027493 mm 0.0002973 mm
Plate with three holes 0.59453 MPa 0.57291 MPa

Conclusion:

  • The yield stress of structural steel is 250 MPa. As we see there is a very big difference. I would like to suggest choose the first case as the deformation is less compared to the second case for 500 N load.
