Challenge

Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole

OBJECTIVE

Design a plate with a hole model AND Determine the maximum deformation and stress developed in the model.

CASE 1

MODEL 1

PROCEDURE

1. Open Ansys Workbench, select static structural.

2. Select geometry and design the model required with proper dimensions.

3.Update the model, and edit the model.

4.Select the material as structural steel.

5.Mesh the component to targe size 5mm.

6.In Analysis give proper fixed support to the left and side of the model.

7.Give a force of 500N in right aand side of the model.

8.Then solve the model.

9.After solving insert the Total deformation and Maximum stress and then evaluate the results.

10.Repeat the above procedure with the case 2 model also and compare the results.

RESULTS

CASE 1

CASE 2

CASE DEFORMATION STRESS

1 MAX 0.00027 MAX 0.6

MIN 0 MIN 0.0023

2 MAX 0.00029 MAX 0.57

MIN 0 MIN 0.0029

ANALYSIS POINT

Case 2 is prefered because it has less stress concentration and less weight than case 1.

MANUFACTURING POINT

Case 1 is prefered because of less machining cost, tooling cost, machining time since it has only one hole than case 2.
