Week 1 Stress Concentration on a Plate with hole
OBJECTIVE:
- To Create the models and set up with the mentioned boundary conditions
- Compare the results and suggest the best model
Steps Followed:
Case 1:
- Open the ANSYS workbench, select the analysis system as "Static Structural "

- New project will be created , rename it to convinience
- From project schematic we can select Engineering Data, this is the place where we can find the materials to the model
- In this case we did not ask to keep any particular material, so default structural steel material is imported
- Next is to create geometry,Right click on the geometry to create the model in space claim

- This option will take you to space claim, there we can create desired geometry
- Create the geometry with the mentioned dimension
- After creating the sketch exit from the sketch option and use pull option to give the thickness to the sketch

- Next step is to set up the model, before opening the mechanical workbench, right click the model and update it
- In this workbench we can assign the materials that we have imported in engineering data
- Mesh the model with required element size , mesh with tetrahedron element

- Next we have to set the boundary conditions, fix the left face and add froce(Tensile) of 500N on the other end

- Afetr setting up the boundary condition we can solve the problem, StaticStructural>right click>solve
- We have to extract the solution, right click on Solution>Insert>deformation, stress
- Repeat the same steps for model 2, the only change will the geometry creation
- Extra two holes of 30mm dia will be included on the each side with a distance of 90mm each from centre of the big hole
RESULTS:
Case1:
- Total deformation=0.00027493 mm

- Von misess=0.60069MPa

- Maximum Principal stress=0.6191MPa

Case 2:
- Total deformation=0.00029728mm

- Von misess=0.58182MPa

- Maximum Principal stress=0.6485MPa

CONCLUSION:
- From the above results we can see the maximum deformation is in the second model
- Maximum stress is more in the second model
- By keeping this in mind we can conclude model 1 is best choice from an analysis standpoint
- There is good result for Model 1(Plate with single hole), and it is easy to manufacture also
- Machining process like facing , drilling has to be done on both the models
- But there is only one hole in Case 1, so Model 1 will again be the best choice in manufacturing standpoint
- If weight reduction in the model plays a mojor role then due to three holes in model 2, the weight of the model gets reduced
- In such Case Model 2 can selected
