Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge

1.What is BIW & define its parts?

 BIW

Body in white (BIW) is the stage in automobile manufacturing in which a car body's frame has been joined together, that is before painting and before the motor, chassis sub-assemblies, or trim

PARTS

  • Cover: The outer shell of the car body.
  • Body: The main structural framework.
  • Floor: The lower part of the car body.

2.What do you understand by BIW nomenclature?

BIW stands for Body in White. BIW is an assemblage of all welded sheet metal panels as before going for priming and painting. BIW refer to the welded sheet metal structure to which other component will be married i.e. engine, chassis, exterior and interior trim

3.What is fixture & its types?

WHAT IS FIXTURE

  • A fixture is a device used to hold, locate, and support components during various manufacturing processes, such as welding, riveting, grinding, or drilling.
  • Its primary purpose is to provide stability to the part being processed, ensuring accurate and consistent results.

TYPE OF FIXTURE

  • Turning Fixtures
  • Milling Fixtures
  • Broaching Fixtures
  • Grinding Fixtures
  • Boring Fixtures
  • Indexing Fixtures
  • Tapping Fixtures
  • Duplex Fixtures
  • Welding Fixtures
  • Assembly Fixtures

4.What is the basic principle of fixture design?

The basic principle of fixture design is 3-2-1 Principle

  • In BIW fixture design, the 3-2-1 principle is commonly employed.
  • This principle aims to lock all six degrees of freedom of the component.
  • Here’s how it works:
    • Three pins are located on the first principle plane (either XY, YZ, or ZX).
    • Two pins are located on the second plane, which is perpendicular to the first plane.
    • Finally, one pin is placed on a plane that is mutually perpendicular to both the first and second planes.
    • By using this method, the component can be securely held in all six degrees of freedom.

     5.Elaborate types of BIW Stations?

Type of BIW Stations

  • Geo Station.
  • Respot Station.
  • Pedestal Weld/Rivet.
  • Loading Station.
  • Buffer Station.
  • Marriage station.
  • Sealing station.
  • Curing station.

6.What are the basic terminologies used in the BIW fixture?

The basic terminologies used in the BIW fixture

  • NC/Mylars/Fingers.
  • PLP (Principle locating points).
  • Blade.
  • Raiser.
  • Shims.
  • Rough Locators.
  • Hardwares.
  • CMM.
