Week 1:- Introduction to BiW and Fixtures Challenge
BIW
BIW is a skeleton of vehicle. It stands for Body In White. In this manufacturing process car body frame parts are joined together in different methods like welding, riviting, bonding or gluing and laser blasing.
The following are parts of BIW:
- Body Side (Body Side Outer, Body Side Inner)
- Under Body (Main Floor, Front Floor, Rear Floor)
- Closures (Front Door, Rear Door, Hood and Truck lid)
- Roof (Inner Roof, Outer Roof)
- Fenders
Nomenclature of BIW
Body In white name itself refers to assembly of welded sheet metal panels before going to painting which are in it actual grey colour.
Fixture
Fixture is equipment which hold the component or object in all degrees of freedom for a manufacturing process or for inspection.
There are three type of fixture are mainly used in automotive industries.
- Production Fixture
- Pre production Operation Fixture
- Checking Fixtures
Principle of Fixture
There are 12 degrees of freedom for a free body. 6 translational degrees of freedom and 6 rotational degrees of freedom.
3-2-1 priciple is widely used in fixture. In this principle we can arrest all 12 degrees of freedom effectivley.
6 translation degrees of freedom are +X,+Y,+Z in postive direction X,-Y,-Z are in negative direction of co-ordinates.
6 rotational degrees of freedom are 3 clock wise and 3 anticlock wise with the axis of X,Y and Z.
BIW Stations
In the process of joining parts panels are moved from one section to another section is called station. In BIW the various station are as follows
- Geo Tool Station
- Respot Station
- Loading Station
- Buffer Station
- Marriage Station
- Sealing Station
- Curing Station
- Checking Station
Terminalogies Used in BIW
- Pin
- MYLAR
- PIN Block
- Riser
- L Block
- Blade
- Shimms
