Challenge

Week - 1 - Consistency of Units

OBJECTIVE:

          The objetive of this challenge to convert the given SI unit value of the given quantites to gm/mm/ms units and also prepare consistent unit system table for different unit system.

 GIVEN TASK:

        The units for the basic measurement quantities, mass distance and time - dictate how the other derived quantities will be expressed. For example, automotive industries use kg,mm,ms as their standard unit system. Construction industries are likely to use tonne,m,s as their unit system. Similarly, PCB simulation in electronic industry uses gm, micrometer,ms as their system of units.

 LS-DYNA doesn't have a default system of units. User needs to input material properties and physical dimensions according to a consistent system of units as per their choice. This warrants that to use LS-DYNA in different circumstances, users has to be conversant with converting quantities from one system of units to another.

 Here's an example: Young's Modulus of steel is 210GPa which is input as 210e+9 in LS-DYNA as per SI unit system. However, if you use kg/mm/ms unit system, the input quantity will be 210. Thus the conversion factor is 10^-9.

Value of the following measurements are given as follows:

  MASS 1kg
  LENGTH 1m
 TIME 1s
 FORCE 1N
 STRESS 1Pa
 ENERGY 1Nm
 DENSITY 1Kg/m3
 YOUNG'S Modulus  210GPa
 Velocity 56.33KMPH
 GRAVITY 9.8m/s2

 Now, here are a few system of units:

 Kg cm ms

 Kg cm s

 gm mm ms

 kg m s

 g cm s

 g cm us

 g mm s

 ton mm s

 slug ft s

 kg mm s

 g cm ms

 kg mm ms

  FUNDAMENTAL QUANITY: A fundamental quantity is that which is independent of any other quantity (length(m),mass(kg),time(s).

  DERIVED QUANITY:   A quantity which is dependent on fundamental quantity is called derived quantity (density(kg/m^3),accerlation(m/s2),celocity(m/s).

      1kg=>1e+3g=0.001 tonne=0.06852slug

       1m=> 100cm=1000mm =3.2808ft

       1s=> 1000ms= 1e+6s

 CALCULATION OF CONVERSION FROM THE SI UNIT TO g,mm,ms

      SI UNIT OF kg,m,s                                               CONVERSION TO (g,mm,ms)

         Mass 1Kg       ------------------------------------------     1000 g

         Length 1m     -------------------------------------------      1000mm

         Time 1s         ------------------------------------------       1000ms

                                                                                    1N= 1mass* 1acceleration

                                                                                        1kg*1m/s2

         Force 1N       ------------------------------------------    (1000g*1000mm)/(1000ms)2

                                                                                       = 10^6*10^-6(g*mm)/ms^2

                                                                                       =1(g*mm)/ms^2

                                                                                       Conversion factor=1

        Stress  1Pa-----------------------------------------------  1Pa=1N/m^2={1kg*(1m/s^2)}/m2=1kg/(m*s^2)

                                                                                       So, 1kg/(M*s^2)=1000g/{1000mm*(1000ms^2)}

                                                                                        =10^-6 g/(mm*ms^2)

                                                                                      Conversion factor=10^-6

        Energy 1Nm---------------------------------------------  1Nm=(1kg*1 m/s^2)*m=1(kg*m^2/s^2)

                                                                                     Now,1(kg*m^2/s^2)={1000g*(1000mm)^2}/(1000ms)^2

                                                                                     =(10^9 g*mm^2)/(10^6ms^2)

                                                                                     =10^3(g*mm^2/ms^2)

                                                                                   Conversion factor =1063

        Density 1Kg/m^3  ---------------------------------     1kg/m^3=1000g/1000mm)^3

                                                                                   =10^-6 g/mm^3

                                                                               Conversion factor=10^-6

                                                                               210Gpa=210e+9kg/(m*s^2)

                                                                              Here we already have 1kg/(m*s^2) while calculating the stress

                                                                               1kg/(m*s^2)=1000g/{1000mm*(1000ms)^2}

                                                                               =10^-6 g/(mm*ms^2)

      YOUNG MODULUS 210 Gpa   -----------------------   Therefore,

                                                                       210e+9kg/(m*s^2)=210e+9*10^-6g/(mm*ms^2)

                                                                        =210e+3g/(mm*ms^2)=210*10^3 g/(mm*ms^2)

                                                                       Conversion factor=10^3

                                                                      56.33Kmph=56.338[10^6mm/(3600*1000ms)}

        Velocity 56.33Kmph ---------------------      =15.647mm/ms

                                                                      Conversion factor=1

                                                                    9.8m/s^2=9.8*1000mm/(1000ms)^2

         Gravity 9.83m/s2   ----------------------     =9.8*10^-3 mm/ms^2

                             Table with all the parameter under respective unit system

 CONCLUSION:

               From this assignment i learned about unit system and its conversion of it detail.
