2. Explain the coordinate system adopted in STAAD Pro software.
3. Elaborate DBR and its uses.
4. Explain the different types of analysis options in STAAD pro.

1. Structure systems in STAAD pro.

Space, Frame, Plane, Truss.

Structure System Geometry Loading Deformation Joints
Space 3D 3D 3D Any
Plane 2D 2D 2D Any
Frame 2D ⊥⊥r to XZ ⊥⊥r to XZ Any
Truss 3D 3D 3D Pinned

2.

Global axis in STAAD pro is fixed and not variable; Local axis is variable and depend on member orientation.

3.

DBR - Design Basis Report.

It is used to specify and compile the data required for analysis and design of structural elements of the project.

It depicts the assumptions and specifications that are being used to develop the documents for a project.

It will also cost help avoid the "Scope Creep" that can affect the project schedule and budget.

4.

Types ofanalysis options in STAAD pro.

Linear Static Analysis

Second order Analysis (P -△△)

Non-Linear Analysis

Member imperfection Analysis

Pushover analysis (Deformation)

5.

When the Fixed or Fixed But type of support is specified, for those degrees of freedom which are to be treated as fully restrained, STAAD assumed the displacements to be known quantities whose value is zero.

Hence, those degree of freedom are not considered for the stiffness matrix, and their value is not calculated.

(For the FIXED BUT support type, if any degree of freedom are assingned a spring using KFX through KMZ terms, those are treated as unknown and their displacements are calculated). For supports directly attached to plates or solids, if the supports are subjected to artificial displacements (called sinking support or support settlements),

the effects caused by such displacements can be computed only if the ENFORCED type of support is used.

In STAAD, support displacement loads cannot be applied to such models when the FIXED type of support is specified.

For the FIXED type, there is no provision to specify a spring constant. So, if a user plans to assign his/her own spring constant, the FIXED BUT type is the only choice.

B)

Practical

1. Create a STAAD Model with the following Specification
a. A beam of span 16m
b. Support : Fixed on one end and Roller support(Horizontal) on the other end
c. A point load of 50 kN at the mid-point
d. Draw SFD and BMD using software

AIM & INTRODUCTION :

AIM :

To create a STAAD Model of a beam with a span of 16m along with Fixed support on one end and Roller support on the other end and a point load of 50 kN at the mid-point. Then draw SFD and BMD using Software.

INTRODUCTION:

  • In STAAD.Pro we can create a various structural models.
  • We can assign the appropriate properties to the created model.
  • Also the supports to can also be assigned at the corners of the structural model.
  • Here in STAAD we can apply the appropriate load cases on the created model and Analyse it.
  • It will show us the exact displacement of the structure as per its properties and supports.
  • In Result we can see the SFD and BMD of the applied Load cases.

PROCEDURE:

  • Open STAAD.Pro software and select New < Model Info.
  • Here make appropriate File name, Location, Units.
  • Then Select Create to open the Workspace to create a STAAD model.
  • After clicking Create, from Geometry input the length of the Beam span in the Node Tab at right side such as Node 1 =0m and Node 2 =16m in X axis.
  • Here we can see that Two nodes are created at the distance of 16m.
  • Then select Add Beam icon at the top of the toolbar to create a Beam by connecting the two Nodes.
  • After selecting Add Beam, try clicking node 1 and then node 2 point to assign the beam span at the distance of 16m.
  • Then click Properties, from the properties tab click Define and from the opened Property Tab select Rectangle < YD= 0.45m, ZD= 0.45m, Material = Concrete and click Add.
  • Then select Materials, from the Material Tab at right click Concrete to check if it is assigned to the created beam.
  • It can be checked by selecting the Concrete Title, then we can see that the created beam lines will be highlighted.
  • Then to assign Support at the two ends of beam, Select Supports and from the Support tab at the right click Create then select Fixed and click Add.
  • Likewise for Roller support click Create then select Fixed But and Release FX and MZ and click Add.
  • Then Select Use Cursor to Assign option to assign the supports.
  • Click and select Support 2 (Fixed support) then using appropriate assigning method assign it in the Node 1 point.
  • Likewise Click and select Support 3 (Roller support) then using appropriate assigning method assign it in the Node 2 point.
  • Followed by Select Loading, here from the Load & Definition Tab click Load Cases < Add < Add New : Load Cases.
  • From the Opened Tab select Primary < Number = 2, Loading Type = Dead, Title = DL.
  • Likewise add another as Number = 3, Loading Type = Live, Title = LL.
  • Then Select Dead Load(DL) and click Add < Selfweight < Selfweight Load < Direction = Y, Factor = -1.
  • Likewise Select Live Load (LL) and click Add < Member Load < Concentrated Force < P = -50, d1 = 8m, Direction = GY.
  • Atlast Select Analysis, here click Analysis Command at the left top corner of the tool bar to open Analysis/Print command Tab.
  • From the opened Tab select Perform Analysis < Print options < No print and click Add.

After adding Analysis/print command, click Run analysis.

Then we should get the Analysed model with 0 Errors and select Go to post proccessing Mode and click Done.

  • Before showing us a Result it will ask us to Select Load Cases and Combinations.
  • Select Created DL and LL, then click OK to view Displacement of applied Load cases.
  • After all that, the Displacement view of the Analysed model will be showed.
  • Here we can see the SFD and BMD for the applied load cases on the model.
  • To view SFD of the model select FY icon present at the toolbar.
  • To view the End, Maximum and Midpoint values for the SFD click and select Annotate icon at the top right of the Toolbar.
  • Then from the opened Tab select Beam results < Shear, tick all the check boxes and click Annotate.
  • Likewise to view BMD of the model select MZ icon present at the toolbar.
  • Likewise to view the End, Maximum and Midpoint values for the BMD click and select Annotate icon at the top right of the Toolbar.
  • Then from the opened Tab select Beam results < Bending, tick all the check boxes and click Annotate.
