Week 1 Challenge
Objective of this challenge is to understand the basic concepts of truss, braces and how they behave to transfer the gravity loads, knowledge of bending moment, Moment of inertia of various sections. Know how to calculate loads and how they are transfered to the ground. Understand how the tension members behave due to thermal expansion.
Calculations & Explanation:
1)Truss Type Reasoning:
In Fig A-Truss A represents as a Pratt Truss. Here the vertical members acts as compresion, while diagonal members are in tension. Thus the compression members will take up the gravity loads.
In FigB- Truss B reprents as a Howe Truss. Here the diagonal members are in compression, while the vertical members are in tension. Thus diagonal members will take up the gravity loads and the direction of all the resulatant loads is transfered to the both ends equally from the mid span due to the diagonal members in the trusses. Thus Truss B will be better in carying the gravity loads.
2) Deflection Shape and Bending Moment:

3) Moment of Inertia, Weight, C/S of area:

4) Load Calculation Problem:

5)Expansion Joint Size determination for temperature:
Given Lo=2000mtr
αl=12x10-6/°C
We have Formula for Thermal Expansion:
`L/Lo=αl∂T`
L/2000=12x10−6x(40+20)
L=0.36x10−6 mtr.
Total Length= (2000+0.36x10−6) mtr
