Challenge

Week 1 Challenge

Aim and Introduction:-

  • The aim of this challenge is to calculate all types of dead loads coming on to it and to analyse the effect of the loading on the box type gider in staad Pro.
  • So first of all the dead load is to be calculated from the given section with considering parapet wall on it. The DL is calculated as per meter run loading.
  • Then the model will be created in Staad pro. and the reactions due to the loading is being analyzed by considering the girder as a member.

Data Given:

Width of Deck Slab =10.2 m

Span of Bridge = 12 m

Pier Size (Circular)=2.5 m

Seismic Zone = IV

Wind Speed =47 Km/hr

Site Distance From Sea =60 Km

Unit Wt. of Soil = 19 KN/m3

Unit Wt. of Concrete = 25 KN/m3

Dead Load Calculation :

For Calculation of Dead load of the girder, first the cross section of the girder has to be determined.

The model has been drawn in Auto cad Software and the area of the cross section has been determined.

Total Area =14.201 Sqm

Area of hollow Section = 9.517 Sqm

Required Area Girder C/s = 4.684 Sqm

Self Wt. of Box girder =

C/S Area

Considering Parapet in both the sides of 1m height and 0.3 m width.

Slf Wt. of parapet = 1 x 0.3 x 25 x 2 No.s

= 15 KN/m

Total dead Load = 117.1 + 15 = 132.1 KN/m

Analysis in Staad. Pro

The model which need to be analyzed has been created in Staad PRO. The box girder has been modeled as a simple deck slab on which the required load to be applied.

The plate thickness assigned as 300mm and the pier size has been given as per the requirement of the problem as 2.5m dia by assigning property.

Plate Thickness = 0.3m

Beam Size = 0.6m x 0.3 m

The 3D rendering view is shown below.

Fixed support in foundation is considered.

Seismic Effect

  • As the structure is coming under seismic zone - IV so seismic load is to be created and applied in staad pro. for analysis.
  • The dead load factor has been applied as -1 and uniform load has been applied in the member with the load calculated for the box girder.

The Same model has been analyzed in run analysis. The screenshot given below.

The Summarised result.

The Reactions due to the deal load.

  • The Results for bending stresses

  • Fy & Fz Reaction due to loading

  • Plate stress
