Usage of Navigation tool , Timeliner and Clash Detection test using Naviswork
1. Aim : Export the revit architecture and structure model to Navisworks Cache.
- Open the Revit file (Architecture or Structure).
- Go to a 3D view actually want in the export
- Head to the “Add-Ins” tab, then choose:
- i. External Tools → Navisworks Exporter
- Check the export settings:
- i. Element Properties: On
- ii. Linked Files: On
- iii. Coordinates: Use Shared
- iv. Room Geometry: On (for Architecture)
- v. Construction Parts: Off
- Export it as a .nwc file
- Save it in project folder (maybe a folder called “Navisworks Exports”)
- Name it clearly, like:
- i. Architecture.nwc
- ii. Structure.nwc
2. Aim : To use navigation tool to walk around the model and walk through the rooms created
a. Use Walk Tool
Go to Viewpoint tab → Navigation Modes → Walk.
right-click and drag to look around.
Turn on Gravity and Collision Detection for realism.
b. Record Walkthrough
Go to Viewpoint tab → Record Animation.
Walk through the model — it records as we move.
Click Stop when done.
c. Save & Export
Go to Saved Viewpoints panel → find the animation.
Right-click to rename.
Export: Output tab → Export Scene → Animation (AVI/WMV).
3. Aim : To use Navigate tool to use Realism feature to walk through the model and record moving as animation in Navisworks file
a) Open the Model
Load the NWD/NWF/NWC file in Navisworks.
b) Enable Realism
Go to the Viewpoint tab → switch to Walk Mode → turn
on Gravity and Collision Detection for a realistic feel.
c) Do the Walkthrough
Use mouse to explore the model. Walk through like giving a tour.
d) Record It
a. Option 1: Save key viewpoints (F2), then animate between them in Animator.
b. Option 2: Open Animator, hit Record, walk through — done.
e) Export Animation
Go to Output > Export Animation → choose video format (AVI/WMV) →
set quality → export
4. Aim To create a clash detection test between the two models
a) Bring in The Models
· Open Navisworks and append both the architecture and structure .nwc files.
· Make sure they’re aligned and sitting nicely together.
b) Set Up the Clash Test
· Go to the Clash Detective tool.
· Create a new test – name it something like “Arch vs Structure”.
· Pick architecture for Set A, and structure for Set B.
· Use “Hard” clashes, then hit Run Test.
c) Look Through the Clashes
Go through each clash and decide:
· Approve – if it’s intentional or within tolerance.
· Ignore for now – if it’s something minor that’ll be fixed later on-site.
· Needs fixing – if two elements shouldn’t be overlapping at all.
d) Color Code and Comment
· Mark them:
o Green = Approved
o Yellow = Deal with later
o Red = Needs fixing
· Drop quick comments so the team knows why it’s marked that way.
e) Save The Progress
· Save the Navisworks file so the test and results are kept.
· We can also export a report if needed.
f) Annotate and Save Views
· For clashes that need fixing, use the Redline tool to mark them up.
· Then save a viewpoint with a clear name.
5. To prepare a schedule for the project developed by adding reasonable assumptions for task start date and end date and simulate the task completion as a visual simulation.
a) Open the model
Open Navisworks and open the model worked on .nwd or .nwf file.
b) Open the Timeliner tool
c) Make up a simple schedule
For example:
|
Task |
Start |
End |
Just a note |
|
Site prep |
May 1 |
May 3 |
Clearing, leveling |
|
Foundation |
May 4 |
May 10 |

|
Framing |
May 11 |
May 17 |
Walls, structure |
|
Roof |
May 18 |
May 21 |
Slap the roof on |
|
Plumbing & Electrical |
May 22 |
May 27 |
Rough-ins |
|
Interior Finishes |
May 28 |
June 3 |
Painting, flooring |
d) Match tasks to parts of the model
· Click on one of the tasks.
· Attach.
· Then go into the model view and select the objects it relates to.
· Repeat for each task.
e) Go over to the Simulate tab in Timeliner.
· We can slow it down, speed it up, or make completed items change color.
f) Make animation
· Click Export Animation.
· Choose a video format (AVI is fine).
· Export it, and timeline simulation video.
g) Save everything
· Go to File > Save As.
· Save it as an .nwd file so it includes the simulation and all the linked stuff.
