Underbody Coating

Underbody coating

Underbody coating is a treatment done for the protection of the underbody of car from the moisture of dusting elements, pollution and road. It also helps to protect inner body parts, frame rails, inner cavities and other places where physically it is not possible to reach but they are expose to corrosion.

Above images shows how underbody coating is apply

Following places contribute to a high percentage of corrosion and paint chip off.

  • Coastal area:
  • In this area vehicle are more prone to corrosion than any different state.
  • Humidity and salt present in this area speed up the process of the corrosion.
  • People live in country side or muddy roads or off roading:
  • When the monsoon starts, the sand and the water mixed and mud get stuck to the car underbody.
  • This makes the car vulnerable and more damage.

How underbody coating is done?

  • Before starting coating the car is washed properly and made dry.
  • Metal brush and sand paper are used to remove all contaminants.
  • Underbody spray is a solvent containing anticorrosive additives, polymers, and bitumen anticorrosive agents based on wax.
  • Undercoating layer is applied to the front edge of the hood, which is an area prone to chipping shock.
  • Also, during this process, the radiator supports, wheel housing, & under rear areas of the body are coated.
  • For exhaust and manifold pipe simple tar coating can not be done because of the temperature rise.
  • So, zinc and aluminum based protective paint is used to cover exhaust and manifold pipes.
  • It creates one layer which is heat resistance and anti-corrosion.
  • First rough layer is spray then after some time interval another two, three layers are sprayed.
  • So that each and every part should cover.
  • Underbody coating creates approx. layer of 2/3 mm.

Types of coating

  • Wax based underbody coating.
  • Rubberized underbody coating.
  • Asphalt based automotive undercoating.
  • Polyurethane underbody coating.

Benefits of underbody coating:

  • It minimizes sound underneath the car and provide a noiseless and smooth driving experience to the user.
  • It insulates the interior of the car cabin from the heat underneath of car.
  • It protects from the paint chip off.
  • Protect vital components.
  • Protect against rust and corrosion.
  • It will extend the life and the value of the vehicle.
