Underbody Coating

Underbody Coating

Underbody coating is terminology to describe the underbody protection of areas that are susceptible to rust. The underneath part of vehicles either SUVs or non-SUVs and even HGVs are exposed to substances like debris, water, mud, stones, and others. The underneath part of vehicles is made with metals and since metals such as pure iron are corrosive, it is important to protect these exposed parts from damage.

Undercoating serves primarily to protect exposed metal parts such as frame rails as well as body components from rust. The image below shows the rust occurrence on the underbody of a Ford F150 truck.

What causes rust?

The main cause of rust is moisture. When water and oxygen come in contact, they promote oxidation, which is the result of chemical reactions between them.

Advantages of Underbody coating

  • It fights against rust - If you live near the sea, or if rust simply occurs frequently, underbody coating can be of assistance especially if you live in an area with too much humidity.
  • Noise absorption - An undercoating made of rubber can absorb some of the noises reaching the cabin if it is very thick.
  • Reinforcement - Underbody coatings come standard on most cars, applying a second coat over them will provide additional protection from water, road debris, gravel, and pebbles.
  • Increased lifespan - Underbody coatings not only protect the underbody from corrosion but also the engine and transmission! Less rusting combined with slower wear and tear increases the longevity of your car.
